US District of Columbia Courts is Hiring a Library Technician Near Washington, DC

Duties

Brief Description of Major Duties:

  • Greets visitors and handles telephone calls and emails. Responds to general inquiries or refers complex questions to the Librarian.
  • Performs intake and processing of newly acquired library materials including unpacking, recycling packing materials, confirming receipt of items on packing slips, and preparing for cataloging.
  • Provides user support and technical assistance to library users utilizing library research platforms, the online catalog, other digital resources, or the Moultrie Remote Hearing Room.
  • Tracks the library management system for overdue books and books on reserve. Notifies employees via email of overdue materials.
  • Assists in the weeding and de-acquisitioning of library materials and updates catalog records in the library management system. Performs library collection maintenance activities including shifting shelving, inventory, reshelving materials, and recording usage.
  • Assists library users with accessing computers, answering basic software and hardware questions, such as Microsoft Office suite, web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, keyboard shortcuts, and solving basic printer troubleshooting.
  • Handles all aspects of user management of the various digital resources provided to DC Courts' employees according to the standard operating procedure. Utilizes digital resource admin portals to add and remove users on a continual basis.
  • Performs copy cataloging in the library’s management system. Unavailable in the LC Catalog, OHIO Link, or other open access index, are to be referred to the Librarian for original cataloging.
  • Provides administrative support for library events including, prepares and distributes publicity materials and logistic support for event set-up.
  • Provides support to the DC Superior Court librarian, when assigned.

  • A probationary period of one (1) year must be successfully completed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma/GED plus four (4) years of experience organizing library materials and conducting inventory in a library.

Preferred:

An associate degree in library studies or a similar field, plus two (2) years of experience organizing library materials and conducting inventory in a library.

Knowledge of library and archival collection materials processes and procedures.

The incumbent should be an enthusiastic and engaged professional who enjoys working with a diverse group of Court personnel and customers and lives the DC Courts’ values of Accountability, Excellence, Fairness, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency.

Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category. Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.
    Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes. Full-time employees earn four(4)hours of sick leave biweekly. This leave can be accrued without limit.

    In addition to the federal health plans, the DC Courts offer employees supplemental vision and dental plans as well as a commuter transit benefit subsidy, for a maximum of $150 a month. There are 26 pay periods in the year.
