Duties

  • This position serves as a Maintenance Worker for the Canyon Country District.
  • Conducts routine upkeep of recreation and administrative sites including cleaning and maintaining facilities and routine site landscaping work, such as clearing weeds, restoring native vegetation and installing supplemental watering systems.
  • Performs corrective maintenance for buildings and facilities such as replacement and/or repair of buildings, water and sewer/septic systems and other facilities and infrastructures including fencing, signs and camp site posts.
  • Assists with construction and installation of facilities at recreation sites such as campgrounds, trailheads, parking areas, group shelters, toilet structures, information kiosks/boards and concrete walkways.
  • Operates and assists in maintaining various types of equipment including heavy duty 4X4 pickups, forklifts, skid-steer loader with bucket, auger and mixer attachments, and hydraulic lift dump trailers.
  • Provides assistance to higher graded staff with maintenance and operation of public drinking water systems and solar systems at administrative and recreation sites.

OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: Work is both physical and office oriented with field operations being a major component of this position. Field duties require driving and/or operation of a variety of equipment and vehicles and performance of difficult and physically demanding repairs. The work requires walking, stooping, bending, lying flat, and repeated lifting. The incumbent must have good vision, reaction reflexes and depth perception. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye, and body. The incumbent must exert physical effort related to actions such as lifting (10-100 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying objects of various weights, sizes and shapes, walking, climbing, crawling and bending. The office portion of the position requires sitting at computer work stations for extended periods of time to produce a bevy of work products such as duty schedules, employee reviews, financial transactions, reports, site assessments and other similar products.
Work Environment: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting the project sites in rough and steep terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Temperatures may range from near zero to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather may include periods of rain. Snow, and heavy winds. Wearing of the authorized BLM uniform is required during field work, and weekend work will also be required. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices, use and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while working with noisy equipment, using power and hand tools; when using chemicals and paints in cleaning and other maintenance and construction activities, It is expected that incumbent will wear PPE such as respirators while performing these tasks and use positive ventilation to reduce risk, and in the performance of doing construction work which sometimes involves working high above ground level.
