ATLAS (Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts & Sciences) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for an eLearning Specialist. The eLearning Specialist focuses on providing support for teaching and learning with technology to LAS faculty, students, and fellow staff. This role will focus primarily on online courses and programs as well as on learning technologies. This position reports to the ATLAS Associate Director for Learning Innovation.

Duties & Responsibilities

eLearning Services and Support

  • Work autonomously and collaboratively with LAS faculty and staff and other campus units such as CITL and DRES to help design, develop, and deliver innovative and high-quality courses.
  • Ensure that online instructional materials comply with accessibility, copyright, and FERPA laws as well as with LAS policies.
  • Provide support for teaching and learning technology used in LAS Online courses and programs.
  • Support instructors, and teaching assistants in the use of learning management systems (LMS).
  • Research emerging educational technologies in the eLearning, multimedia, and AI fields.

Customer Service and Support

  • Deliver excellent customer service by responding to requests in person, on the phone, or via email in a timely, polite, and professional manner.
  • Work on a team of IT professionals to support LAS faculty, students, and fellow staff.
  • Work with units, teams, and individuals to meet their unique instructional technology needs.
  • Work to build relationships with our client community by proactively communicating relevant information and discussing their needs, initiatives, and service levels through periodic meetings.
  • Work to resolve customer satisfaction issues.
  • Train students, faculty, and staff in eLearning services and systems.

Project Management and Task Delivery

  • Manage projects at the divisional or team level and drive deliverables and results by designated deadlines.
  • Complete individual projects and tasks assigned by the supervisor on time and with quality.

Organizational Support

  • Work within cross-functional teams within ATLAS and LAS to ensure outstanding service delivery to our customers.
  • Implement centralized services where practical and align them to the unique needs of LAS units or customers.
  • As needed, supervise student/hourly employees, including the assignment of tasks, performance management, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Three (3) years of work experience in IT‐related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows:

  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year,
  • Associate’s Degree equals eighteen (18) months,
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years,
  • Bachelor’s Degree equals three (3) years.

Demonstrated experience in a customer service environment.

Demonstrated experience supporting classroom or online instruction.

Demonstrated experience supporting instructors with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or others).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in technology at an institution of higher education or equivalent.
  • Experience successfully distributing accessible media assets through multiple delivery points and formats in compliance with copyright and fair use.
  • Experience managing projects of 3-6 months in duration.
Successful candidates will have the following:
  • Knowledge of concepts and models for effective online course design.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to troubleshoot common desktop and mobile computing applications and hardware.
  • Knowledge of current technology for the delivery of multimedia content (e.g., audio/video streaming platforms).
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive data.
  • Capable of independently pursuing and completing projects.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
Appointment Information

This is full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
