Job Description Summary
The Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) provides the expertise, business process, policies and standards required to plan, design, construct, operate, maintain and renew the physical assets of the University, excluding the health system. In addition, the Division, comprised of approximately five Departments, is responsible for the strategic planning, management and operation of non-academic University property, and collaborating with the neighborhood to create a safe, diverse and economically vibrant destination. With close to 12M square feet of space, FRES maintains 186 buildings on a campus of 276 acres, completes over 60,000 maintenance requests per year, and starts approximately 250 projects a year. FRES is comprised of the following Departments: Administration, Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Maintenance.
The University of Pennsylvania is implementing a campus transformation entitled Penn Connects ( http://www.pennconnects.upenn.edu ). This comprehensive, award winning effort is expanding the campus over the next 20 years, including the construction of new academic research and recreational facilities. Sustainability Program Manager
The Sustainability Program Manager is responsible for the implementation and tracking of the University's Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (CSAP) with school-wide partners, Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee co-chairs as well as provides strategic guidance on operational planning and engagement initiatives. The position also manages student internship programs such as the Eco Reps Program, summer and academic year internships, and leads and manages university- wide sustainability events such as Earth Week. The Sustainability Program Manager reports to the Sustainability Director and helps support other strategic initiatives as needed.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Implementation of Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (CSAP) activities: Work with Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) staff, School & Centers stakeholders, and ESAC subcommittees and working groups to implement and track all projects in support of the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan across a broad spectrum of sustainability topics such as decarbonization strategies, GHG reporting, stormwater, procurement, waste etc. Support the Sustainability Director in CSAP strategic planning and communication to relevant stakeholders.
Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee (ESAC): Work with the Sustainability Director in overseeing the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee. Facilitate and manage all ESAC subcommittees and working groups in partnership with subcommittee co-chairs to ensure all goals within CSAP are tracked and implemented. Support co-chairs with meeting planning, facilitation, and implementation for all subcommittees and working groups.
Intern Management: Refine and implement Student Eco Reps Program annually. Handle all hiring and management of 15 - 20 student Eco Rep interns, identify campus project partners, and host mid-year and year-end presentations. Manage summer and academic year interns. Handle all hiring and budget needs for Eco Reps and other interns as needed.
Outreach Events: Manage and implement major events and event series such as Earth Week and Move in Green. Assist in other major events as needed such as Creating Canopy, MLK Environmental Justice events and Climate Week events.
Student Outreach : Manage student outreach programs that supports CSAP. Work with key student groups, Residential Services and other student-facing offices to develop sustainability outreach programs. Co-lead Student Advisory Group for the Environment to ensure student engagement in CSAP.
School & Center Sustainability Coordinators : Manage the Sustainability Coordinators group, comprised of senior representatives across Penn's schools and centers on institutional sustainability progress, provide input on monthly agendas, facilitate meetings, and strategic university-wide partnerships and initiatives.
Miscellaneous : Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in sustainability, environmental studies, planning, engineering, design, or humanities and 3 to 5 years of experience managing sustainability programs or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree preferred. Also Required:
Excellent interpersonal skills, and written and verbal communication skills
Experience managing, implementing and tracking sustainability programs and projects
Ability to work collaboratively on sustainability projects
Experience managing interns
Knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices, including:
Energy & Carbon reduction strategies
Waste minimization
Sustainable transportation
Design and planning strategies
Outreach strategies
Commitment to institutional and societal sustainability
Ability to work both as a team leader and member, and complete projects with minimal supervision
Commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution
Basic financial skills to track transactions and budget expenditure
Proficient in Excel Preferred:
Experience in strategic planning, project management, team management, partnership building, and marketing
Higher education experience
