Department Summary

The Department of Cinema Studies at the University of Oregon is a community of scholars, practitioners, and staff dedicated to providing students with a well-rounded study of cinema—a term that we use to encompass film, television, and/or emerging forms of media. Cinema Studies at UO is a growing department in the Humanities that is committed to interdisciplinarity and diversity that spans both global communities and marginalized U.S. social identities. Our scholarship, pedagogy, and practice explore a range of media objects and their contexts, including history, artistry, industry, identity, geopolitics, and systems of power. Our department’s shared mission is to use our critical and creative tools to amplify underrepresented voices, interrogate power, and drive change by blending filmmaking practice and its academic study.

Position Summary

This position supports the daily site operations and growth of production facilities in the Department of Cinema Studies; supervises student employees in the day-to-day work of the equipment room, production spaces, and post-production facilities; assists the Multimedia Supervisor with the development of instructional tutorials and workshops for faculty, staff and students; and serves as technical support for production equipment used in production classes (inventory/management, check out systems, maintenance, etc.).
This position will work directly with the Cinema Studies Multimedia Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills of technology and information systems generally obtained through an AA degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified course work in applicable fields of study and at least one year of related work experience. Course work related to multimedia production or similar fields of study may be considered related.

Professional Competencies

Ability to:
  • Utilize Microsoft office software (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
  • Lead a team and encourage an atmosphere of learning and growth.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Work with users to interpret needs, provide appropriate solutions and support, etc. (interpersonal/communication skills).
  • Identify, develop, and coordinate plans for use of site resources (e.g., computers, production and production equipment).
  • Design, develop, and implement instructional applications.
  • Maintain materials/inventory/technical references and administer facility usage.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot Macintosh system connections (OSX).
  • Employ current knowledge of new multimedia hardware/software and developments in the industry.
  • Proficiently use standard and multimedia packages.
  • Apply broad knowledge to standard and non standard technical applications to solve a wide range of problems and accomplish tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using filmmaking accessories (lighting/light kits/tripods, jibs, dollies, cranes, glidecams, etc.).
  • Knowledge of digital audio recording and technology, including microphones, connectors/cables, and sound capturing techniques.
  • Experience with routine/reactive equipment maintenance.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3-5 years of experience with audio/video hardware and non-linear editing software (prefer Adobe Premiere and/or Avid).
  • Experience with client support in a classroom or other support-related position.
  • Supervisory or lead work experience.
