Department Summary

The Central Business Service Offices (CBSO), a shared service office, provides service within the Office of the Provost portfolio. The specific services are in the areas of: Human Resources, Finance, and business operations inclusive of , Payroll, Purchasing, Contracting, Travel, and Accounts Payable.

The mission of the shared services group is to provide high quality, consistent services to its academics partners through a centralized service unit, offering expertise in processing a wide variety of financial and human resources transactions and functions. The CBSO actis as a partner and liaison to the Business Affairs Office, Purchasing and Contracting Services and University Human Resources, and Payroll Administration.
The CBSO unit provides administrative services for several organizations within the OtP portfolio including:
College of Design
School of Journalism
College of Education
Honors College
The units supported by CBSO constitute a large business enterprise consisting of more than 2,500employees and a total budget more than $100 million in budgeted operations funds.

Position Summary

The Director of the Central Business Services Office (CBSO) provides direct leadership, guidance, and oversight for all operations and management of the CBSO and relationships with unit partners. In this role, you will build and maintain strong relationships with the academic leadership in partner units, promoting a positive and trustworthy reputation for the CBSO. Additionally, you will work collaboratively with a variety of partners across campus including other shared services and central university units.
In your first year in this position, you will build and lead a team to learn the unique needs of your customers, develop policies, practices, and workflows to meet those needs, while working closely with university central units (e.g., University Human Resources, Vice President for Finance and Administration’s Office, the Budget and Resource Planning Office, Business Affairs Office and Information Services) to implement best practices across the CBSO portfolio. You will lead, and meet regularly with, the CBOS governance committee and engage unit leaders as needed to develop reports and other useful tools that promote operational effectiveness and efficiency.
As the director, you will oversee both the strategic plan for CBOS and the implementation of appropriate business and human resource processes and internal controls. You will develop, interpret, and act on appropriate metrics to analyze the effectiveness of operations. In this position, you will use your effective communication skills to ensure transparency into policy and process for stakeholders, and you’ll meet, and manage, expectations of those stakeholders through service agreements, excellent customer service, and relationship building.
A big part of this position will be building and enhancing a cohesive and positive culture within CBSO through team building, mentoring, and coaching. You will provide comprehensive, visible, and effective leadership to a team of 20, including four direct reports. You will supervise and have oversight of employees in multiple employee groups, including groups that are part of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs). It will be important that you know and understand the relevant policies and CBAs and ensure appropriate training for your team. As in any leadership position, you will handle escalating employee conflicts, discipline, performance management, employee development, and resourcing staffing needs. All university employees will have annual performance reviews.
While there is room for a lot of innovation and creativity in this role, there is also a high level of support. This position will be one of several shared service directors on campus and will work closely with university partners who can provide guidance, consultation, subject-matter expertise, and a sounding board for new ideas.
You will report directly to the Office of the Provost’s designee.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-years’ experience of increasing responsibility in leadership and management of a team in an area of budget/finance, human resources, change and/or program management, as well as supervision or lead work of support staff, OR
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education of 7 years.

  • Ability to incorporate innovative practices into the workplace to enhance effectiveness and efficiency, with a dedication to provision of quality service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Five years of experience that includes a combination of leadership in the areas of: fiscal operation management, human resource management, change and project management.
  • Supervisory experience with responsibility for five or more employees.
  • Experience with shared services models in higher education or a similarly complex organization.
  • Experience with complex campus management systems; examples, Workday, Banner, People Soft, MyTrack, Kronos, ADP etc.
