Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The University Human Resources Benefits Consultant plays a crucial role in supporting the administration and implementation of employee benefits programs at the university. This position requires a strong understanding of benefits administration, compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and excellent communication skills. This position will work closely with university stakeholders, employees, and benefit vendors to ensure effective and efficient delivery of benefits services. Tasks will include program administration, accounting functions, technical support, and team reinforcement.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience in Benefits administration. Experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting benefits related policies and procedures required. Excellent communication (written and oral) and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability in counseling employees, supervisors and other staff on retirement and other benefit related options. Experience in higher education or the public service sector preferred.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

* General knowledge of benefit programs including: retirement plans, Family Medical Leave, Workers' Compensation, disability insurance, medical insurance and other insurance under IRC 125

* Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy in the interpreation and application of benefit policies

* Proven ability to meet recurring deadlines and resolve issues in a timely and effective manner

* Outstanding customer service that shows empathy, cultivates an excellent rapport with employees and retirees, and an ability to communicate effectively with varying needs and level of comprehension

* Experience with Banner ERP systems for Universities

* Strong Microsoft Excel skills

Managing data integrations

Essential Tasks

* Monitoring and resolving data issues in the Empyrean platform

* Resolving discrepancies in various benefit files including retirement, insurance, and other similar data files (e.g., NC Flex benefits)

* Coordinating file spec changes with IT and external vendors

Percentage Of Time 30 Key Responsibility

Researching and resolving complex employee issues

Essential Tasks

* Working with HR Business Partners on problematic FML, Workers' Compensation, disability, and other such cases involving employees being out on a permanent or intermittent basis.

* Assisting General Counsel with records requests (e.g., public records, records for legal cases, etc.).

* Researching the intersections of complex FML and Workers' Comp situations and developing options on returning employees to the workplace, accommodations that may be needed, coordination of benefits, etc.

* Resolving recordkeeping discrepancies and ensuring recordkeeping processes are reliabile (e.g., FML tracking, shared leave, etc.).

* Researching and resolving retirement correction issues.

Employee Consultations

Essential Tasks

* Consult with employees separated due to RIF, and other involuntary separations informing them of benefit options including continuation of insurance, retirement options, etc.

* Provide consultations for non-standard retirements, including phased retirement.

* Consult with employees applying for disability benefits and assist them in getting the necessary documentation to apply for benefits.

* Serve as a resource for employees, addressing inquiries and concerns related to general benefits administration.

Coordination with benefit vendors and TPA's

Essential Tasks

* Establish and maintain strong relationships with benefit vendors, consultants, and third-party administrators.

* Coordinate with benefit vendors, consultants, and third-party administrators to ensure accurate and timely processing of enrollments, terminations, and claims

* Research and resolve non-standard issues regarding employee coverage, reporting, or other matters.

* Coordinate vendor communications to employees and virtual or on-campus visits.

Other consultant responsibilities

Essential Tasks

* Support the needs of the Benefits Team with decisions related to sensitive and complex FML, Workers' Compensation, disability, and other situations.

* Provide support in emotionally charged customer service interactions.

* Provide guidance on payroll related decisions around deductions and leave administration as needed.

* Assist in drafting policy and procedure on processes pertaining to benefits administration (e.g., leave polices, employee outprocessing, etc.)
