Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
New Student Transitions & First Year Experience (NST&FYE) is committed to providing a comprehensive and collaborative approach to ensure the success and retention of our new students.
NST & FYE offers a range of programs and resources for new students delivered through orientation programs, transition courses, shared learning experiences, peer support, and student leadership. Drawing from extensive knowledge about the first year experience, NST & FYE educates the campus community about the unique and evolving needs of our new students and their families in order for all of us to provide optimum support inside and outside the classroom.
NST & FYE ultimately supports new students and their families’ transition to college by encouraging exploration and connections to UNCG’s many people, programs, and resources which provide a solid foundation for academic and personal success, while cultivating a sense of Spartan pride and affinity for UNC Greensboro.
Position Summary

This position reports to the Director for New Student Transitions and First Year Experience. The Coordinator has the following duties and responsibilities, but are not limited to:
Oversight for the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of the Spartan Orientation Staff; and SOAR and RWW programming.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from a four-year university or college in the area of higher education administration, college student personnel, student development, or a related field or Bachelor’s degree from a four-year university or college with two years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to develop and implement presentations and workshops to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of technologies, including word processing, excel, e-mail, PowerPoint and social media.
  • Be available and willing to work irregular office hours during certain times of the year.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in developing and implementing programs in support of student transition, success, and retention.
  • Experience developing and supporting diverse student leaders and the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate training for student staff.
  • Experience supervising and/or advising undergraduate or graduate students.
  • Experience in large-scale programming planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience with digital and print communications as well as social media strategies.

Recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of SOS
Essential Tasks
  • Oversight for the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of the Spartan Orientation Staff.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the staff attendance at the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW). – Monitor budget expenditures for area funds.
  • Select, train, develop, supervise, and evaluate the Spartan Orientation Lead Staff (SOLs).
  • Plan and execute the annual SOS reunion at Homecoming and SOS Banquet.

Key Responsibility
SOAR and RWW programming
Essential Tasks
  • Help plan and implement various aspects of SOAR logistics (new student orientation) including, but not limited to, attendee check-in, SOS facilitated programming, Spartan EXPO, SOAR volunteer program, materials inventory, and Visual Zen reservation system.
  • Coordinate the Rawkin’ Welcome Week collaborative university-wide committee, ensuring effective programming for all new students, giving special thought to student populations who could most benefit from tailored programming as well as the marketing of events/programs.
  • Collaborate with the Co-Curricular Initiatives Administrator to ensure all Rawkin’ Welcome Weeks programs are marketed and tracked through SpartanConnect.

Supervision and other support
Essential Tasks
  • Supervise one Graduate Assistant, one Summer Graduate Intern and 30 Student Leaders.
  • Support NST & FYE to work collaboratively with colleagues within the department and across campus to support various initiatives for first-year students, including, but not limited to, leading a sub-committee for NAV1GATE: New Student Convocation.
  • Provide support to the Associate Director for New Student Transitions & First Year Experience and other office functions; – Other duties as assigned to ensure the fulfillment of the New Student Transitions & First Year Experience mission.
