Position Summary

The Institute of Design and Innovation (IDI) at theUniversity of New Mexico (UNM) is looking for a software developer withproficiency in web development to support its mission of leading academicimprovement through interactive analytical tools and applications. Wespecialize in building interactive data-driven web applications and providingdata analytics using machine learning and statistical models to supportinnovative self-service tools and analytics to students, faculty and staff. Theinstitute’s applications focus on improving academic outcomes and streamliningthe student journey through applied research and accessible information. As amember of a creative team that enjoys a relatively flat organizationalstructure, you will be responsible for working independently andcollaboratively to design and build interactive, data-driven web applicationsas well as contributing to other data analytics and machine learning projects.Our ideal candidate is passionate about building intuitive applications andsolving challenging problems in an environment where independent work and creativefreedom is encouraged.
In addition to having strong and modern technical skills forbuilding web applications, the preferred candidate is someone who:

  • Loves to learn and stay up to date with modern development trends.
  • Considers the end-user experience and strives to not just make applications functional but make them clean and intuitive to use.
  • Writes code that is clean, dry, and extendable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan, build, and deploy production-ready web applications using modern tools and frameworks.
  • Be involved in the design and development of all aspects of an application including the API, backend, database, and deployment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of data analysis pipelines and tools.
  • Work with faculty, staff and other project stakeholders to gather requirements and design creative solutions that meet their needs.
  • Provide ongoing support, maintenance, and bug fixes for developed applications.
  • Work as a member of the IDI team while also being self-sufficient and taking ownership of assigned projects.
  • Learn new tools and technologies as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of object-oriented programming fundamentals, data structures, and design patterns.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with web fundamentals such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Some experience with backend frameworks such as Ruby on Rails or .NET Core.
  • Basic relational database and SQL knowledge.
  • Some experience with front-end frameworks such as a VueJs.
  • Comfortable in a linux/unix development environment.
  • Experience using version control tools and platforms such as git, github or gitlab.
  • Experience with AWS platforms and tools is a plus.
  • Experience with data analysis and machine learning techniques is a plus.
