Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
UGA Minimum:
* B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field and has satisfied the academic requirements of the State of Georgia Laboratory Licensure Law, chapter 111-8-10-.06 required.
* Five (5) years of applicable clinical laboratory experience as an MT/MLS or equivalent required.
UHC Preferred:
* Clinical laboratory supervisory experience preferred.
* Computer skills to include: Windows, Microsoft office, electronic medical record (EMR) and laboratory information systems (LIS), interfaced equipment, faxing and reference laboratory reporting
* Some experience with insurance relationship to laboratory testing
* Experience with Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation Standards, CLIA Regulations and Federal and State laboratory regulatory and safety standards
Position Summary
The Assistant Laboratory Manager is responsible for the technical supervision of the day-to-day laboratory operations of support staff. The Assistant Laboratory Manager provides daily resource management both human and physical (supply inventory), documents technical competency of staff, monitors and revises Laboratory Policy and Procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements/technical updates, monitors, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory interfaces and information systems and assists with data mining and report formatting. The Assistant Laboratory Manager assumes management of the laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Clinical Laboratory skills appropriate to perform waived, moderate and high complexity testing
  • Understanding of age specific and cultural needs of UHC student patients and providers
  • Competent in laboratory information systems, inventory and human resource management
  • Skilled in critical thinking, prioritizing, organization, communication across levels of understanding and privacy/confidentiality.

  • Able to see objects closely, as in reading and microscopy.
  • Able to master tasks involving use of fine motor skills.
  • Able to discriminate color.
  • Able to hear sounds, as in timers, alarms, telephone over the background of a clinical laboratory environment. Able to give and receive verbal commands.
  • Able to push, pull or lift objects with minimum effort continuously, moderate effort frequently, and maximum effort occasionally.
  • Able to sit, stand, or remain on feet for 50 minutes consecutively, 8 hours per shift.

Technical Oversight/Competency
* Oversees and participates with laboratory staff in day-to-day performance of all standard clinical laboratory tests and procedures.
* Collaborates with other technologists when unusual clinical specimens or test results present.
* Verifies abnormal results as specified by test procedures when necessary.
* Identifies and investigates possible causes of abnormal or unusual test results.
* Documents technical competency of all staff.
* Assists clinicians in the appropriate selection of laboratory tests, specimen collection procedures, and interpretation of results.
* Responds to administrative requests and makes administrative decisions in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.

Laboratory Interfaces & Information Systems
* Ensures connectivity to all integrated systems and that work logs and reports are accurate and timely.
* Performs daily, weekly, monthly and ad hoc LIS/EHR monitoring tasks/reports.
* Sets up new tests in LIS and EHR as needed.
* Troubleshoots information and interface system problems with UHC IT staff and/or LIS vendor and corrects problems.
* Maintains confidentiality, security, and integrity of data and information.

* Directly supervises 2 staff members.
* Actively engages in development, engagement and retention of each staff member.
* Arranges daily schedule and leave requests for laboratory staff to ensure adequate coverage.
* Participates in interviewing and hiring of qualified staff; oversees orientation, training and competency testing of personnel; conducts performance evaluations, determines merit raises for Phlebotomist/Lab Clerk positions.
* Oversees lab orientation of medical students, Residents and new UHC clinical staff.
* Advises Laboratory Manager regarding Medical Technologists performance evaluations and competency issues.

Material Resource Management
* Establishes inventory control of lab supplies and materials to minimize out-of-date supplies.
* Prepares order lists for Laboratory Manager.
* Monitors back-orders from vendors finding alternate vendors when necessary, overseeing receipt and shelving of supplies.
* Keeps purchasing records.
