Departmental Overview
Berkeley Underground Scholars (BUS) is the undergraduate academic recruitment and retention program at UC Berkeley serving formerly incarcerated students and students impacted by incarceration. The program sits within the Division of Equity and Inclusion. Founded in 2016, BUS is a program that rose out of the advocacy of the Underground Scholars Initiative (student-run and student-initiated).

Responsibilities
Underground Scholars UCB Operations and Management
Leads and directs a wide variety of projects on campus and follows through with all levels of staff and individuals inside the organization. Makes high-level contacts of a sensitive nature, internally and externally requiring discretion and diplomacy in order to negotiate with or persuade officials to adopt the proposed solution. Includes collaboration with other equity programs, collaboration with other campus departments, including admissions, financial aid, housing, BUS Advisory Board, Academic Senate, and others. Manages day-to-day operations and strategic planning for the Underground Scholars including hiring and training student staff, calendaring, ordering supplies, data collection, and program evaluation.
Recruitment
Leads statewide recruitment strategies in jails, prisons, and community colleges that result in the enrollment of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students to UC Berkeley. Programs include: Underground Scholars Ambassador Program - hires & provides training and leadership development to community college students to recruit for Underground Scholars at their community colleges. Incarcerated Scholars Program - Provides information, resources, academic advising, and application support to hundreds of currently incarcerated students.
Retention
Provides retention support to formerly incarcerated UC Berkeley Students. Collaborates with Associate Director to develop programs, classes, curriculum, and events that meet the needs of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students on campus including orientation, graduation, political education, professional development, and wellness programming. Provides individualized support to recently released students transitioning to UC Berkeley from the Incarcerated Scholars Program.
Advocacy
Collaborates with the executive director on the organization's advocacy work. Co-leads policy fellowship for formerly incarcerated students Provides individual advocacy for students facing barriers on and off campus Management: Responsible for program management of Berkeley Underground Scholars. Hires, trains, and supervises student work-study staff and interns. Develops annual priorities and timelines for recruitment and advocacy. Tracks and evaluates program effectiveness and student outcomes through online surveys and by monitoring academic performance. Develops strategies to improve outcomes and meet changing service and business needs with efficiency. Provides support to the Executive Director in fundraising and reporting. Provides support in areas of expertise around retention and recruitment for statewide expansion work. Provides specialized advising and coaching to students holding staff and leadership positions. Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Brings extensive knowledge to support, guide, and mentor students leading projects and programs serving formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students. Guides students in interaction with external partners and represents students on these issues when appropriate.
Partnerships
Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success. Works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Analytical/problem-solving skills. Strong skills in analyzing, researching, and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals/analyses. Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Strong policy analysis techniques. Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn campus processes, protocols, and procedures. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of common campus-specific computer applications. Strong analytical/problem-solving skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing. Small to mid-level project management skills. Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Knowledge of issues and policies pertaining to equity and inclusion, educational access and opportunity, workplace diversity, and/or faculty diversity. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning and/or project management skills. Demonstrated knowledge of and/or ability to learn the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations, and constraints. Demonstrated ability and experience working with diverse, multicultural work teams and constituents. Knowledge of California state legislative process and advocacy strategies Ability to analyze and synthesize large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals. Proven ability to exercise a high level of good judgment, tact, discretion, and confidentiality when required. Proven ability to complete work in a fast-paced environment, meeting multiple and competing deadlines and priorities.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000.00 - $90,000.00.
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. This position is exempt and paid monthly. This is a hybrid position, eligible for 30% remote capability.
