Assistant Summer Camp Director * *

Schedule: 30-35 hours per week

Job Type: Seasonal - Mid-June through End of August

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/ Hourly

Reports To: Director of Operations & Summer Camp Director

Pay Range: $30 to $32 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY: STATEN ISLAND, NY The Assistant Summer Camp Director will work directly under the supervision of the Summer Camp Director and Director of Operations. The Assistant Camp Director will be responsible for the daily oversight of program and facility operations in addition to staff supervision. The Assistant Camp Director must be able to provide support related to providing an appropriately safe, caring, and enriching environment for children enrolled in their prospective UAU Summer Camp. In addition to providing support in variety of ways related to the expansion and development of programming. The Assistant Summer Camp Director is responsible for providing support in communicating with parents, guardians and other camp staff during and after camp hours of operation as directed by the Summer Camp Director.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

  • Knowledge of camp policies, rules, guidelines as well as general practices and procedures in accordance with UAU.
  • Provides assistance with the development of the program, planning and implementation for all camp activities including weekly trips and special activities and/or assignments.
  • Makes recommendations to the Summer Camp Director regarding any and all staffing issues.
  • Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members.
  • Assists with the organization and coordination of the camp staff weekly schedules (days off, hours worked, etc.)
  • Assists with providing the administration and scheduling pertaining to staff trainings.
  • Handles questions, problems, and concerns of parents/guardians before and during camp in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Monitors and ensures appropriate participant behavior and adherence to camp rules and regulations.
  • Handles and communicates emergency situations and reports them to the Summer Camp Director and Director of Operations by filling out all injury and accident reports for every incident in a timely manner.
  • Assesses the overall program to see if there are any changes that need to be made for optimum functioning and makes recommendations when necessary.
  • Providing assistance with the planning the weekly schedule of camp activities.
  • Ensure that there is always enough camp staff to participant ratio with a minimum of two staff members at any one time and for field trip groups as well.
  • Assist with administering and overseeing successful Fire, Safety and Lockdown drills
  • Assisting with the development of a full summer calendar of activities, that are enriching, engaging and involve parents and participants.
  • Ensures the safety and cleanliness for their assigned site location in accordance with UAU Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree program in camp management, recreation and leisure, or similar.
  • NYS certification or license in Education, preferred
  • 1 years direct experience working with children 13 years of age and younger
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in supervisory capacity in childcare program or related field of work
  • Experience in assisting with the planning and developing camp curricula, as well as modifying activities when required
  • Experience in working with children, as well as arranging camp accommodations, meals, supplies, and equipment
  • Proficiency in office software, including MS Word, Excel and e-mail
  • Knowledge of activity-related safety regulations, as well as health and sanitation requirements
  • Ability to document processes and perform recordkeeping
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need.
  • Working both inside and outside (based on appropriate and safe weather conditions).
  • Involves sitting approximately 30 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 20% of the time.
  • May include working prolonged periods of time standing and walking, about 95% of the day.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The ability to observe details at close range (withing a few feet or more of the observer).
