This hybrid position requires two days per week in the office at our San Francisco office.

About you:

You want to lead the way in innovation, exploring the latest technologies and finding new solutions. You thrive in a collaborative environment and are eager to work with and learn alongside the best in Product, Design, and Engineering.

About this role:

As a Full-Stack Senior Software Engineer, you will work closely with engineering, product manager, and design to develop world-class web experiences for learners on our platform. You will be helping them find the right course and engage directly with course content. We're looking for applicants who are curious about the possibility of technology, put an emphasis on delivering quality solutions, and match our cultural values. You will emphasize pragmatic solutions and customer experience. You'll probably have a couple of years working in the industry, but we care less about how long you've been working and more about what you've been doing. We'd love to hear about what you've worked on, how it was built, and why it succeeded.

What you'll be doing:
  • Develop, test, document, and release end-to-end features for Udemy's web application.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, and design to create the best possible experience for customers using the Udemy website (desktop and mobile).
  • Maintain and create web developer tools and frameworks.
  • Create web development standards and advocate for them through peer code and process review.
  • Maintain and develop Udemy's web development platform.
  • Mentor in engineering techniques, processes, and new technologies.
  • Learn new technologies, frameworks, and systems and share your knowledge with the web team.
What you'll have
  • 4 years of professional software development experience
  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems
  • Expertise in object-oriented and functional programming paradigms
  • A solid understanding of semantic HTML, CSS, and core JavaScript concepts (We love Typescript!)
  • Professional experience with ReactJS or another modern JavaScript web framework
  • Experience in one or more languages: Java, Kotlin, Python, C, or C .
  • Experience in web services development using frameworks such as Spring Boot
  • Experience using messaging technologies such as Kafka
  • Experience using SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with gRPC, graphQL, Kubernetes, and Docker.
  • A solid understanding of core web and browser concepts (eg. how the browser parses and constructs a web page)
  • Experience with writing automated tests (eg. Jest, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape, React testing library)

We understand that not everyone will match each of the above qualifications. However, we also realize that everyone has unique experiences that can add value to our company. Even if you think your background might not perfectly align, we'd love to hear from you!

Life at Udemy

We aspire to be as vibrant and dynamic as the communities we serve, as inquisitive as those who use our platform, and as revolutionary as the future we strive to open for everyone. Here are some of the things we love about life at Udemy:

  • We're invested in creating an inclusive environment that welcomes a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. From creating employee resource groups, ensuring we're a Fair Pay Workplace, and building a flexible work culture, our belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion (BEDI) initiatives always put our people first. We want you to be able to bring your authentic self to work because when we all do, we're better for it.

  • Learning is what we do - inside and out. Our Learning & Development team is second to none, helping ensure your journey is one of continuous progression. You'll also have unlimited access to Udemy courses, monthly UDays (meeting-free professional development days), and a generous annual professional development stipend.

  • Our reason to exist is to revolutionize learning - that calls for taking risks and learning from failures. Whether it's our hackathons (a company-wide effort to envision new possibilities for our product) or sharing our prototypes, we see experimentation as a crucial step on the path to success.

  • We're committed to creating world-class employee experiences and are proud of the recognition of this by Great Place to Work.

Of course, the best thing about being part of Udemy is knowing your work makes a difference for people and organizations around the world. You've got the skills; why not use them to help others develop theirs?
