This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working onsite 2 days per week on UCSD Campus and remote.

DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications for the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences and serves as a member of the UC San Diego Health Sciences Communications Team. Working both independently and in collaboration with communications professionals across the health sciences and broader university, the Assistant Director creates and implements communications plans and projects that support strategic communications within the Health Sciences and the priorities of the Vice Chancellor.

The Assistant Director is a creative thinker with strong communications skills and a passion for working with people to navigate change and improve organizational culture. They plan and manage communications strategies using creative thinking, strong writing and editing skills, and a knowledge of best practices for traditional and digital media and related platforms.

This role has significant partner-facing responsibilities and requires an individual with a collaborative mindset, commitment to inclusion and excellent interpersonal skills. Primary functions to include internal communications, production of "Discoveries" magazine, executive communications and other projects as assigned.

Internal Communications - 40%* Partners with communicators and leaders across the health sciences and broader university to create, develop and implement comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, digital and electronic communication.* Manages and integrates internal communications content and tools within the Health Sciences, including websites, intranets, newsletters, listservs, and mass emails to deliver coordinated messaging across all channels.

Discoveries Magazine - 40%* Oversees production of the digital and print components of the UC San Diego Health Sciences "Discoveries" magazine, including managing the writing, editing, design, print, and distribution. * Writes select magazine feature stories and articles.* Manages relationships and contracts with internal and external partners, agencies and vendors.

Executive Communications & Special Projects - 20%* Produces content, speech writing, and presentation materials for the Vice Chancellor of the Health Sciences. Advises on concepts and direction for talking points, articles, social media posts and emails.* Coordinates and/or assists with special projects as needed. This may include publications, exhibits, conferences, meetings, and events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Seven (7) years of related experience or a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three (3) years' experience and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Solid verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Exceptional writing and editing skills as demonstrated through professional samples and/or portfolio.

  • Strong problem-solving and project management skills with a demonstrated record of managing multiple priorities, engaging others, and delegating work as needed, while meeting tight deadlines.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, technical aspects and requirements of various channels, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.

  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.

  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Evening and weekend work occasionally required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $74,300 - $134,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $35.58 - $64.42

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
