MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER

Classification: Class Code 6111 / Level 4 / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited

Hiring Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 (commensurate with experience)

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Major Gift Officer (MGO) is responsible for securing philanthropic gifts from alumni and friends of UC Law San Francisco. This is accomplished primarily through individual connection, interactions, and extensive relationship building. This position reports to the Chief Development Officer and will be tasked with two key objectives: 1) manage and develop a portfolio of active and prospective new major and principal gift donors; and 2) close gifts and work with the MGO of Stewardship and Donor Relations to ensure effective stewardship of individual donors.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gift Officer works as a member of the Office of Advancement.

The MGO will be tasked with developing a major and principal gifts pipeline rooted in the best practices of the development and fundraising industry. Key duties and responsibilities for this assignment include:

  • Actively manage and navigate a portfolio of 125-150 active and prospective major and principal gift donors through the donor cycle – identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships between prospective donors and the law school through personal, one-on-one meetings, and strategic engagement initiatives. Goals for personal visits/consequential contacts, solicitations and number of major gifts closed will be set and reviewed on an annual basis.
  • Partner and collaborate with members of the Advancement team, the Chancellor and Dean, Chief of Staff, faculty, and other internal members of the UC Law SF community to advance solicitation strategies.
  • Attend events throughout the year including institutional signature events (e.g., Convocation, Swearing-In Ceremony, Chancellor’s Reception), Reunion, Alumni Chapter and Affinity Group events, and other events presenting opportunities for donor engagement and cultivation.
  • Memorialize and document all communications and interactions with donors by entering timely contact reports into the Raiser’s Edge NXT donor database.
  • Work with the Chief Development Officer, as needed, to refresh and maintain a viable prospect portfolio.
  • Remain current on programs and faculty/research/student initiatives at the College.
  • Other related responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with preference for candidates who have advanced degrees.
  • 3-5 years of progressive and successful development experience in major gifts or other individual fundraising role, preferably in the higher education arena.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of major and principal gift donors in order to develop fruitful relationships with the law school.
  • Possess a keen understanding of the fundraising cycle: identifying, qualifying, soliciting, and stewarding major and principal gift donors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated writing and editing skills in the preparation of proposals, and in the drafting of related correspondence, often for the signature of institutional leaders.
  • Stellar relationship building skills and ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to appropriate use of sensitive and confidential constituent data.
  • Excellent time management and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to work well under deadline and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and achieve quantified goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel around the region and to other areas of the country.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
