ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Legal Research & Writing and Moot Court

Classification: Level 3 / Class Code 1717 / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited

Anticipated hiring rate : $95,000 per year

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Dean, the Associate Director will support and assist the Legal Research and Writing and Moot Court Department. Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

Legal Research and Writing
  • Prepare syllabus, handbooks and conduct research to support the 1L Legal Writing curriculum.
  • Assist LRW and Moot Court Director in preparing course materials for LRW 1 and LRW 2.
  • Conduct trainings for LRW 1 and LRW 2 Teaching Assistants.
  • Assist in selecting LRW 2 course topics, editing case records, and preparing course material for all LRW 2 sections.
  • Facilitate LRW 2 oral arguments for all sections.
Appellate Advocacy
  • Support the Appellate Advocacy Curriculum.
  • Select Appellate Advocacy case topic alongside Appellate Advocacy professors.
  • Conduct merits research for the Appellate Advocacy case topic following case selection.
  • Prepare the appellate record and all relevant course materials for Appellate Advocacy.
  • Revise and update the Appellate Advocacy Handbook and the Intercollegiate David E. Snodgrass Competition Rules annually.
  • Conduct training for the Appellate Advocacy Teaching Assistants.
  • Facilitate the Intercollegiate Davide E. Snodgrass Moot Court Competition - recruit judges, prepare bench memo, conduct judges training, organize space for in-person oral arguments, and implement a uniform scoring system.
UC Law SF Intercollegiate Moot Court Team
  • Review and update Moot Court Intercollegiate Handbook annually.
  • Assist Moot Court team members with technical aspects of appellate brief writing and oral advocacy.
  • Monitor team members' competition brief submissions and oral argument practices.
  • Develop training materials for Moot Court Board Members, student coaches, team members, and alumni coaches, and conduct trainings for Moot Court Board Members, student coaches, and team members.
  • Facilitate Moot Court Team tryouts and assist with team selection.
  • Assist with travel arrangements for Moot Court competitions.
  • Encourage alumni engagement and recruit alumni to serve as judges and coaches.
  • Serve as the point of contact for Moot Court alumni and coaches.
  • Facilitate fundraising efforts.
  • Establish UC Law SF involvement in NALAE and attend Moot Court conferences.
  • Create promotional content for uclsfmootcourt.com.
  • Create and post content to UC Law SF's Moot Court social media accounts.
  • Monitor and update information posted to and stored on SharkNet and uclawsf.edu.
UC Law SF Appellate Project
  • Serve as a Supervising Attorney for the UC Law SF Appellate Project. (An adjunct faculty appointment may be necessary to support this element of the role.)
  • Help with UC Law Appellate Project's case load.
  • Conduct independent research and assist with case strategy.
  • Monitor students' brief writing progress, provide edits and feedback on submissions.
  • Prepare students for oral arguments, and assist with case filings, motions, and petitions, as needed.
REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Juris Doctorate degree and California and Federal Bar Admission required.
  • Experience with Moot Court and academic programs at a law school.
  • Experience with appellate brief writing and oral advocacy.
  • At least two years of practice experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES .
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be energetic, articulate, and detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of Moot Court competitions.
  • Knowledge of Web Design, InDesign, and other Department software is a plus.
