The position is knowledgeable of professional standards, practices and guidelines of the Perioperative area. The role performs Supervisory Level functions/duties including: supervises up to 40 Operating Room Assistants; perform lead/advanced operational duties in the Pavilion Operating Room, Children’s Surgery Center, and University Tower Surgery Suite; trains subordinates in work techniques; participate in employee performance appraisals and corrective discipline; set priorities and coordinate work of the unit; assist in establishing new work methods and procedures; participates in recruitment efforts.
This position is responsible for developing and providing educational support, training, and staff development of new and current ORA support staff. The employee in this role will identify the learning needs for ORA support staff and provides ongoing and continuous unit education, reviews ORA competencies at regular intervals and maintain competency documentation of the ORA support staff.
Additional responsibilities of this position include providing assistance and support services in the clinical and non-clinical areas of the operating room. This incumbent also works alongside the ORA support staff and participates as an ORA team member with responsibilities for maintaining the O.R. environment. The employee in this role participates in activities that clean, organize, and prepare all areas of the Operating Room. In addition, but not limited to, this position facilitates transport of supply items, instruments, and equipment. The employee in this role will transport patients, and under direct supervision of a registered nurse, may assist with patient care activities.
This position is also responsible for maintaining and organizing supply items, instruments, and equipment, properly handle clean and infectious waste, distribute sterile supplies, instruments and equipment, clean and test autoclaves, document properly in various logs, and provide other general duties pertinent to the department’s needs.
