Our Ideal Candidate

In an ever-evolving organization such as Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, the role of the Vice President of People and Culture holds a pivotal position. To embark on this transformative journey, an ideal candidate emerges—a strategic leader dedicated to shaping and nurturing the organizational culture, building strong trust by enhancing the employee experience, implementing company-wide best practices, and driving effective internal communication.

At the heart of the role lies the cultivation of a people-focused culture that harmonizes with the organization's mission and values. This culture extends beyond mere rhetoric—it is about creating an environment where every individual feels not only valued but empowered. The ideal candidate champions the development of an organizational structure that fosters alignment with business goals and facilitates team connectivity. Trust-building, culture setting, leadership development, and change management become their tools to mold an inclusive, innovative, and engaging environment.

To steer the ship towards its cultural destination, effective internal communication is vital. The Vice President of People and Culture is the conductor of this orchestra. Moreover, they are tasked with demonstrating excellence in culture and team building across the organization, and most importantly, supporting the organization through change. Collaboration with other departments and leaders is imperative to ensure a unified effort and shared priorities.

The cultivation of talent is a cornerstone of the ideal candidate's vision. Proactively sourcing talent through diverse pipelines, educating hiring managers, and leveraging cultural competency are some of the strategies they employ to recruit a more diverse workforce. Beyond recruitment, the candidate devises strategies for talent management and development. This includes building organizational and individual competency models, implementing a performance management system, and ensuring the development of comprehensive succession plans.

In the quest to be a best-in-class employer, the ideal candidate champions the development of a "total rewards" approach to employee compensation and benefits. Striking a balance between quality, cost-effectiveness, and perceived employee value is key. The introduction of a market, equity, and performance-based reward management system becomes the cornerstone. Additionally, the candidate emphasizes that employee wellness should be a top priority for every business leader.

To ensure that the organization's policies are not just words on paper but are inclusive, championed by leadership, and effectively implemented, the candidate takes on the role of steward. They navigate the complexities of employment, safety, security, and asset protection/use, ensuring they are consistent with current laws and guiding leaders in their compliance responsibilities.

The ideal candidate not only excels in the aforementioned responsibilities but also brings their team to excellence. They set expectations for staff, select and onboard team members, provide regular coaching and feedback, conduct performance appraisals, and identify training needs. Their leadership is a beacon that guides the entire department towards success.

Remaining aware of industry trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and innovative technologies is not an option—it's a necessity. The ideal candidate maintains this knowledge and applies it to communicate and propose changes in policy, practice, and resources to executive leadership.
