The Safety Manager is responsible for evaluating practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and take appropriate action, while adhering to the law and OSHA guidelines for the company. This position requires development, preparation and enforcement of policies to establish a companywide culture of health and safety, with a goal of reducing and preventing workplace injury. 

Some of the job specific duties include: 

  • Visit job sites to conduct safety audits on personnel, equipment, facilities
  • Evaluate, assess and alter safety procedures and policies for the benefit of employees
  • Prepare and conduct safety training sessions for employees
  • Collaborate with managers and the Maintenance team to work on the company goal of minimizing risk
  • Educate and directly address safety concerns with employees if situations warrant intervention
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory safety standards including Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)
  • Research safety regulations and policies and institute changes to ensure compliance
  • Lead the safety committee and facilitate safety meetings
  • Work with third party consultant(s) and workers compensation insurance company for recommendations and/or training regarding safety issues 
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal purchasing department for safety purchases and documentation
  • Develop and enforce preventative measures
  • Maintain required documentation for OSHA and all other safety related agencies
  • Analyze accident reports and evaluate injury case studies based on available facts; present reports on accidents, violations and determine root causes
  • Track incident metrics and apply findings
  • Lead injury and incident inquiries and evaluations
  • Identify process bottlenecks and offer timely solutions
  • Monitor and approve workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employees' safety
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in occupational health and safety, safety management or similar field
  • 3 years of experience as a Safety Manager or similar role
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA with regard to manufacturing and fishing industry
  • Previous OSHA training required 
  • Experience with taking the lead role during inspections
  • Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
  • Experience with writing policies and procedures for health and safety
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
  • Working knowledge of safety management information systems
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Ability to train, influence and motivate team members
  • Ability to enforce policies and procedures
  • Self-driven with demonstrated ability to take initiative
  • Assertive disposition with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think and respond to situations preventatively
  • Organized with detailed work habits
  • Critical thinker with effective problem-solving skills
  • Effective time-management skills
  • Ability to travel to both Town Dock facilities
  • Fluent communication in English, including reading and writing
  • Basic math skills
  • Physical abilities: Climb ladders to inspect equipment, lift 25 lbs. and stand for long periods of time
  • A strong belief and commitment to continuous learning and improvement, positive attitude, teamwork, accountability and ethical behavior.
