Adult Behavioral Health Therapist

Location: Southgate, MI

Shift Type: Days

Shift Times:

• Regular working hours for staff are Monday through Thursday 8:30am to 7:00pm and Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.

• Some evening or weekend hours will be required based on program needs.

Type: Permanent

Salary Range: $50,018.00 - $73,281.00 (Pay Dependent on Experience)

The Adult Behavioral Health Therapist is responsible for maintaining a caseload consisting of clients with a primary mental health and/or co-occurring substance abuse diagnosis. The therapist is required to conduct intake assessments, to maintain the case record in a timely fashion, to complete authorizations with various funding sources in a timely manner as required, and to conduct appropriate treatment services based on medical necessity. ABH is the largest program that the client has and a typical case load is around 50 active cases. ABH currently has over 100 employees which includes leadership, case managers, and other therapists.

Job Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

• Primary responsibility is to participate in the delivery of clinical services, including intake evaluations, and direct treatment for adults and families.

• Assess and document the needs of clients who present themselves for outpatient mental health and/or co-occurring substance abuse services utilizing Person-Centered Planning principals.

• Provide individual and group therapy.

• Work collaboratively with others in relation to the client and family including psychiatrists, primary care physicians, school personnel and other family service or support people.

• Must meet all of the contractual requirements of the funding sources and/or agency, including maintaining State licensure.

• Participate in clinical supervision, team meetings and case consultations.

• Complete clinical records and agency documentation in a timely manner consistent with policies and procedures of the Guidance Center.

• Follow a professional code of ethics.

• Coordinate effective discharge planning prior to case closure.

• Complete 24 hours of training in the treatment of adults with mental health and/or co-occurring substance use disorders.

• Other duties as needed.

• Additional requirements include:

o Cultural competency, the ability to work effectively with a diverse population, the ability to engage and maintain therapeutic relationships with individuals and families in a variety of modes of treatment, the ability to develop collaborative relationships with other unit staff and providers, and a willingness to be flexible.

Required Skills and Experience

• Must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or Counseling and possess the corresponding State of Michigan licensure. Candidates without a state license can be considered but must obtain state licensure (LLMSW, LLPC, TLLP, LMSW, LPC or LLP) within a 60-day training period beginning on the date of hire. This period may be extended by up to an additional 60 days of training at the sole discretion of the employer. Failure to obtain licensure within the training period will result in the employee being unqualified to perform work functions. Beyond the training period, all state licensures must continually remain active, in effect, and free from disciplinary action.

• Candidates must obtain the Qualified Mental Health Professional credential within 120 days of hire. Must have one year of experience (may include time spent in fieldwork or internship) treating or working with people who have been diagnosed with mental illness.

• Must be able to work independently.

• Must have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Must have excellent organizational and attention to detail skills in order to track and prepare data accurately and timely.

• Must have the ability interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

• Cannot accept candidates who are on student/work visas, and/or require sponsorship to work in the U.S. at this time.

• Individual programs may have additional requirements.

Certification and State Licensure Requirements

• Michigan State License is required

• LLMSW, LMSW, LLPC or LPC or TLLP or LLP with the State of Michigan

Throughout the last six decades the agency has maintained a collaborative relationship with its local communities and schools to support adults and children experiencing mental health difficulties and other challenges. A group of concerned residents and educators recognized the need for mental health services in our area and joined forces in 1958 to help form The Guidance Center. Since then we have worked as a team to respond to the needs of children, adults and families in southeast Michigan.

Our expertise in mental health and wellness, early childhood education, free preschool for income-eligible families, intellectual & developmental disabilities services and support, mentoring, substance-use disorder, Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center, Champions of Wayne, Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), Nurture the Future, and research and evaluation helps more than 15,000 children and adults annually work on their own personal triumphs in life.
