The Newsroom Director will help run The Daily Beast’s newsroom and manage the various teams on breaking coverage, investigations, special series, and features. With a fearless attitude and a nose for scoops, the Director will be an integral part of our news-gathering operation. The ideal candidate will have a high and energetic news metabolism and a proven ability to edit and report out compelling stories with flair and wit. The candidate should bring a sophisticated understanding of stories involving politics, entertainment, media, U.S. and global news, race, power, money, and identity. The Director will handle the daily, weekly, and monthly story plans, oversee breaking news and enterprise stories on all the desks, and help the Executive Team shape the Beast's future coverage. An enthusiasm for brainstorming on big stories, for diving into the news scrum day after day, and for taking on bullies, bigots, and hypocrites, is a must. The role will involve recruiting and scheduling for the news team and thus requires attention to detail and an ability to work easily as part of a team.
Responsibilities
- Edit and run reporters on news stories, profiles, features, and investigations with exclusive information and sharp perspective.
- Assign and shape stories on major players in the worlds of politics, entertainment, media, and beyond.
- Help reporters to track down sources and comb through records.
- Help run breaking news coverage of major events.
- Manage the daily, weekly, and monthly story plans for coverage
- Brainstorm and execute on special series for the Beast
- Shape the Beast's coverage across all desks
Qualifications
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
- Willingness to collaborate with other editors, reporters, and media partners.
- Strong editing, reporting and writing skills.
- In-depth knowledge of politics, entertainment, media, and U.S. and global news.
- A self-starter who can conceive and execute stories with impact.
- A team player who can manage a range of teams
- An understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures, communities, and racial and ethnic identities.
- 5 years of experience.
Location: New York or D.C. preferred
