Role Summary 

Possible remote but must live in CT or the surrounding area as onsite will be required for training and meetings

Reporting to the Board of Directors of Ortho Connecticut and the Chief Operating Officer of Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company (HOPCo), the Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the continued development of a high-performing and accessible orthopedic specialty practice that provides a consistently outstanding patient and provider experience.

The CEO will work closely with governance and physician leadership to provide a clear sense of direction in the areas of growth and strategic planning, clinical program planning and development, further expansion of ancillary and ambulatory operations, and the enhancement of administrative support services. S/he will be responsible for ensuring the necessary infrastructure to support continued growth in a manner that emphasizes enhanced patient-focused processes; establishing and communicating performance benchmarks; and guiding performance improvement activities across multiple geographically dispersed practice sites.

Ortho Connecticut seeks a seasoned, decisive leader with strong business acumen in medical management and delivery and a demonstrated track record for leading a complex organization providing excellence in clinical care and customer service. This individual will bring the ability to help position Ortho Connecticut as a recognized leader in orthopedic care through innovative thought leadership, quality, operational excellence, and customer-focused care delivery. Essential to the success of this position will be the ability to lead through both influence and authority and bring both strategic and metrics-driven operational expertise and management to Premier. 

Specific Responsibilities

  •  Provide leadership and direction to guide Ortho Connecticut through anticipated growth, evolution, and cultural change in a manner characterized by a sense of urgency, a spirit of collegiality, accountability, a commitment to excellence, and the creation of the optimal patient care experience for patients and their families
  • In partnership with leadership, play a leadership role in matters related to business development and strategic positioning. In this context, oversee strategic and business planning and conduct opportunity and business analyses related to mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and other newly conceived relationships/partnerships.
  •  Oversee the administration and daily operations of multiple practice sites and diagnostic/ancillary facilities, including newly integrated sites. Provide leadership and guidance in the financial and operational components of new practice integration. • Provide leadership and guidance in creating and implementing benchmarking systems, metrics, and dashboards to facilitate the management of quality, patient, physician, and employee satisfaction, utilization, outcomes management, cost management, and overall medical practice parameters. 
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Ortho Connecticut’s efforts to create and promote effective physician relationships with both internal and external constituencies, especially referring physicians from across the region. 
  • Ensure the ongoing promotion of a culture that values performance accountability,
    benchmarking, best practice identification, and the cross-fertilization of clinical excellence-related activities throughout Ortho Connecticut. Utilize analytical skills to track, trend and interpret relevant operational and financial metrics. 
  • Provide leadership, direction, and education in the ongoing assessment, mentoring, and development of a high-performance, accountable, results-oriented, visible, and responsive leadership team. 
  •  In collaboration with other leaders, create an organizational culture that is patient-focused, driven by quality, physician-responsive, cost-effective, action-oriented, entrepreneurial, accountable, and strategic, and can seize opportunities for growth and performance improve
  •  Maintain a contemporary knowledge of advances in ambulatory and outpatient care and actively participate in national orthopedic and ambulatory forums and performance improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  •  A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health administration, or a related discipline; a Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  •  At least ten years of management experience in the ambulatory, outpatient, or physician organization environment, including direct responsibility for physician relations.
  •  A leader who strategically, politically, instinctively, and operationally understands physician concerns and issues. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to engender trust and credibility and to build bridges with colleagues. 
  • A track record of conceiving of and implementing best practices for outpatient and ambulatory care across multiple sites. 
  •  Advanced performance improvement skills such as Lean Six Sigma with hands-on experience in process redesign and system review. 
  •  A sophisticated understanding of complex systems. Excellent business and financial savvy coupled with an ability to leverage resources. 
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills accompanied by the ability to use data to drive operational and clinical performance improvement. 
  • Superb communication, facilitation, negotiation, and listening skills, accompanied by the ability to know how and when to influence, persuade, direct, challenge, and relinquish control. 
  •  Entrepreneurial, creative, and resourceful.
  •  A personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty and integrity together with a strong service orientation.
