Description

Purpose: Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, prepares, packages, and distributes medications; performs clerical duties related to the operation of a pharmacy; and performs other related duties as required. The PRN Pharmacy Technician must be IV Certified and needs to be proficient with Pyxis ES Medstations and Anesthesia Systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Retrieves and delivers inpatient medication orders and supplies.

2. Prepares unit-dose medications specific to patient needs, including patient’s weight, allergies, and age (pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric), under direct supervision of a pharmacist.

3. Monitors inventory for expired drugs that must be returned to manufacturer.

4. Assists in record keeping activities in any assigned area.

5. Maintains adequate drug inventories in pharmacy areas and patient care areas.

6. Performs automated cart-fill.

7. Prepares sterile products utilizing aseptic technique.

8. Communicates effectively with other pharmacy employees, healthcare professionals, and patients while appropriately recognizing age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.)

9. Maintains a neat, clean and organized work area.

10. Demonstrates flexibility in staffing assignments.

11. Adheres to internal controls established for department.

12. Performs other related duties as requested.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
• Licensure/Certification/Registration:
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) National Certification. Certification must be in good standing with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy
  • Sterile Pharmaceutical Compounding Certification
  • IV Certified
• Experience:
  • 1-2 years hospital pharmacy experience
• Skills:
  • General knowledge of pharmacy practices and procedures; clerical and recordkeeping practices and procedures, including patient billing; drug names and generic equivalents; pharmaceutical dosage forms and strengths; common medical terms and abbreviations; units of measure.
  • Ability to operate a computer and learn the department’s computer system; read physician’s medications orders; perform simple arithmetical computations, measurements, and conversions; maintain confidentiality; perform detailed work.
  • Proficient with Pyxis ES Medstations and Anesthesia Systems.
