Summary

Works under moderate supervision to provide technical and supportive skills in operation of pharmacy.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • IV sterile compounding
  • Preparation
  • Inventory management
  • Maintaining IV certification (if applicable)
  • Distribution of verified medications
  • Work under the supervision of the licensed pharmacist, available to cover the infusion shift hours, respond to the phone calls as needed.

Experience and Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in pharmacy or equivalent technician is required.
  • Registration with Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician or Pharmacist Intern is required and national certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required by start date.
  • Sterile compounding (IV) certification accredited by ACPE, if required to compound sterile admixtures in their role.

Job Duties

  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area and provides leadership to other technicians.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure.
  • Enters charges and credits and restocks returns. Makes good decisions, accepts responsibilities, and maintains competency in multiple areas.
  • Accepts duty as knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and works to imporve these areas.
  • Acurately fills all orders, prescriptions, floor stock, and/or fill lists.
  • Delivers medication on time.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding.
  • Repackages bulk medications (oral, injectable, etc) into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. 
  • Enters charges/credits and restocks returns accurately and consistently.
  • Provides prompt and courteous service.
  • Receives incoming calls and prioritizes bases on urgency or nature of requests.
  • Audits and signs out all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines and organizational policies.
  • Identifies and corrects discrepancies and reports unusual usage pattern and trends. Completes medication area inspections.
  • Removes and documents expired medications.
  • Assists with ordering, managing and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in all medication storage areas.
  • Enhances personal growth and development.
  • Participates in educational programs, in-services and meetings.
  • Is a knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and routinely works to improve these areas.
  • Participates in new employee orientation and training.
  • Treats co-workers and organizational and departmental property and resources with respect.
  • Maintains clean, orderly and stocked work environment. Works and problem solves with minimal supervision.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions:
    • Directly interacting with or caring for patients;
    • Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants;
    • Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records);
    • Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • If IV certified and scheduled to compound sterile admixtures, performs IV calculations and prepares al IV admixture using proper aseptic technique.
  • Handles all intravenous chemotherapy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work requires knowledge of metric and apothecary systems and ability to utilize basic pharmacy equipment.
  • Work requires attention to detail, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and practices.
  • Work requires good oral and written communication skills.
  • Work requires telephone and personal contact with various levels of internal and external personnel and organizations.
  • Work requires English skills (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Good general health and stress coping ability.
  • Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.
  • OSHA Category III.
  • Work requires ability perform math reasoning.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in office and/or pharmacy setting.
