What we want The Student Development Specialist provides professional and supervisory skills for developing, planning, promoting, and implementing student developmental programs, activities, and services. Work includes establishing performance goals and measures to evaluate success. The student development specialist exercises sound judgment, integrity, and professionalism in making critical decisions within assigned areas of responsibility. Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree One or more years of experience in student affairs work or related specialty at a higher education institution. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Microsoft application proficiency – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Forms, SharePoint Ability to learn and integrate new programs and systems. Student program development and event planning with the ability to coordinate multiple projects and execute tasks with a high level of detail while maintaining efficient use of time. Knowledge of and interest in the intersection of co-curricular programs and professional skills development. Experience with student governance, organization advising, and relevant university protocols. Excellent information-seeking skills and the ability to conduct independent research to solve problems. Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision. Ability to work as part of a team, demonstrating a willingness to be collaborative and supportive. Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills facilitating effective relationships within an academic setting. Flexibility and commitment to periodically work beyond traditional office hours and/or work weekends, including some travel to off-site locations. Ability and willingness to maintain strict confidentiality in the performance of administrative duties and the delivery of student services are non-negotiable. Preferred Qualifications: Masters-level degree in higher education administration, student affairs, organizational leadership, or a related discipline; Juris Doctor degree Experience in a law school (or other professional school) setting coordinating programs to enhance student growth and professional development, emphasizing student organization formation, programming, and general advising. Essential Duties/Tasks: Student Governance and Organization Advising - Act as a liaison between the Law School and University and off-campus entities, assisting student organizations in achieving their stated mission and purpose. Provide general guidance to university-recognized organizations, ensuring compliance with university protocol in all endeavors. Assist student leaders by guiding them in the formation of university-recognized organizations. Assist student leaders with GPA appeals. Identify university and external financial resources assisting groups in preparing funding requests. Review internal funding requests submitted by university-recognized law school organizations. Advise student organizations assisting in the planning and execution of student-run events, including monitoring fiscal activities. Oversee the processes for student organization room reservation and event promotion within the law school. Department Programs and Initiatives - Assist in developing and executing a variety of department-sponsored programs, workshops, and activities promoting student professional development throughout the academic year. Provide support for large-scale department events, including Student Orientation and Commencement. Budget preparation, monitoring, and reconciliation for items under the student development specialist’s supervision. Student Financial Support - Assists in managing third-party student financial support opportunities, including scholarships, fellowships, stipends, grants, and writing competitions. Act as liaison with third-party entities providing financial opportunities for the student population. Identify and promote financial opportunities through appropriate communication channels. Develop and maintain a method for tracking student engagement and outcomes. Data Collection and Analysis - Maintain pertinent student records within areas of responsibility. Develop and administer assessment instruments to measure the effectiveness of projects and initiatives. Collect, analyze, and interpret data (quantitative and qualitative) to produce internal and external reports, inform decisions, and guide actions. Respond to requests for information, preparing data in the desired format. Provide verbal and written activity updates upon request. Institutional Service and Professional Development - Serve on committees, work groups, and task forces as assigned. Maintain membership and engage in the activities of relevant professional organizations. Complete continuing education training to improve skills and stay abreast of industry standards. Recommend departmental and programmatic changes following best practices standards while improving efficiency and effectiveness in policies and procedures. May work with inter-departmental project teams in the completion of special assignments. Ensure compliance with federal, state, institutional, and accrediting agency laws, policies, procedures, and standards. Why Texas A&M University?
