SUNY College of Optometry is Hiring a Learning Specialist (Onsite) Near New York, NY

The State University of New York College of Optometry is a leader in education, research, and patient care. All classrooms, research facilities and the University Eye Center, which is one of the largest optometric outpatient facilities in the nation, are located on 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in midtown Manhattan. An extension center at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse New York is in the planning phase.
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a new initiative aimed at supporting mental health and wellness, student academic success, and faculty teaching development. The Center will play a significant part in the College’s initiative to establish the Upstate Extension Center.
Position Description:
The Learning Specialist will report to the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and will play a vital role in supporting and enhancing the academic success of students at the College. Working closely with the Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Student Affairs, Department Chairs, and faculty coordinators, the Learning Specialist will assist in overseeing and coordinating various academic enrichment programs including Academic Advising, Clinical Enhancement, NBEO Preparation and Remediation, First Year Enrichment and Pre-Optometry Programs.
Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, course instructors, the Committee on Course and Standing, and the Registrar to track student academic performance and identify at-risk students.
  • Work closely with faculty and students to develop personalized academic interventions, including individualized learning plans utilizing the academic enrichment programs.
  • Work closely with the Mental Health Counselor to support and provide reasonable accommodations as per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, when applicable to enhance student wellbeing; providing referrals as needed.
  • Conduct and evaluate learning evaluations and assessments to identify student learning needs.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to students on utilizing learning strategies and techniques to support learning and refer students to available to resources.
  • Manage and oversee the peer tutoring and teaching assistant (TA) programs, as well as identify, train and supervise tutors and TAs.
  • Develop, organize and provide workshops and training materials for faculty, residents, students, and staff as identified.
  • Manage and maintain records and data for all academic enrichment programs to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and identify trends and areas for growth and improvement.
  • Make data-driven recommendations for enhancing student learning experiences.
  • Stay abreast in evidence-based learning theories and practices, and identify resources and technology to continually enrich and support learning.
  • Collaborate with the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist to assist faculty in developing instructional materials and assignments to increase student participation and engagement and support learning.
  • Work closely with Curriculum and Instructional Design Specialist and Information Technology Services to provide information and technical support to students in the use of educational technologies and tools.
  • Develop and manage an online platform dedicated to housing learning resources, guides and materials.
  • Participate in the development of Center goals and objectives and assessment of resource needs.
  • Participate and support the Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Affairs, and campus-wide initiatives and projects.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree with a focus on education, psychology, cognitive science, or related field.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Some travel may be involved.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in providing student advising/counseling with intervention strategies.
  • Experience within a higher education setting required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training and experience in adult learning assessments and evaluation required; ability to administer appropriate testing instruments and interpret results.
  • Experience with ADA Accommodations.
  • Experience with graduate or professional learners in the healthcare or optometry education field.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, training and development techniques, as well as learning facilitation strategies.
  • Experience in conducing workshops and producing diverse learning materials, including print, graphics, audio, video, animation, and multimedia formats.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is desirable.

Minimum of $75,000. SUNY Optometry provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a generous benefit package. 15 days of annual leave to start and 13 paid holidays per year.
