JOB TITLE: School Assistant Principal
REPORTS TO: School Principal
SUPERVISES: Building Staff & Students
DEPARTMENT: Building Administration
JOB STATUS: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SALARY/BENEFITS: Commensurate with education & experience


 

JOB FUNCTION

Primary responsibility is the improvement of instruction by providing leadership and administration which will motivate instructional and support personnel to strive for superior performance so as to provide the best possible opportunities for student growth and development, both educationally and personally.

Assist Principal with maintaining overall site operations; receiving, distributing, and communicating information to enforce school, district, and state policies; maintaining the safety of school environment; coordinating school activities; communicating information to staff; and addressing situations, problems, and/or conflicts that could negatively impact the school.

This position directly reports to the School Principal and functionally reports to the District Cabinet.

TERM

Shall work two-hundred six (206) days each fiscal year, commencing and ending as determined by the Superintendent.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This list is not all-inclusive and is only intended to illustrate the various responsibilities and duties performed.

  1. Performs all duties and responsibilities as identified in the Illinois School Code.

  2. Assists Principal with implementing policies, procedures, and/or processes for the purpose of providing direction and/or complying with mandated requirements; developing and administering the general school routine and coordinating all activities within the school building.

  3. Advocates for the students, staff, school, district, and public education (e.g. responsive to parents and community, creates a welcoming climate and culture, markets school programs, promote and emphasize support for parental involvement) to encourage and promote community involvement and outreach.

  4. Composes a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, etc.) to document activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

  5. Supports curriculum and instruction on-site (e.g. enforces grade-level standards, provides opportunities for enrichment and intervention, encourages differentiated instruction for all students, creates and supports learning communities, sets high expectations, educational leader, continuous improvement mindset) for the purpose of increasing student achievement.

  6. Assists Principal with identifying intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs affecting students’ success in school; Take steps to direct and coordinate the efforts of teachers and parents with staff services and special education personnel.

  7. Implements instructional and assessment strategies by collecting and analyzing student achievement data, facilitating discussions among teachers and staff and working with the Principal and Instructional Coaches to plan professional development.

  8. Facilitates communication (oral and written) between personnel, students, and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, and/or resolving conflicts in accordance with District policy.

  9. In compliance with Board Policy, as well as state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, addresses and resolves student behavioural problems violating the student code of conduct and Board Policy; maintain a standard of student behaviour designed to command respect and minimize school and classroom interruptions.

  10. Acts as Instructional Leader for the site and District (e.g. responsible for student achievement, focused conversations with teachers, daily classroom visits, shares and models effective teaching strategies, confronts classroom mediocrity, has high expectations, provides structure, strong disciplinarian, creates and maintains positive school climate (orderly), drive to move the school forward, and includes all staff in the team effort in promoting student achievement) for the purpose of providing support to site staff in order to increase student achievement.

  11. Assists Principal with managing school administrative functions (e.g. facility maintenance, budget, staffing, supervising extracurricular activities, monitoring transportation services provided to students, etc.) to maintain safe and efficient school operations within district guidelines.

  12. Models for all staff (e.g. develops personal growth plans for self and all staff, ensures quality staff development at the school site, creates and supports learning communities, uses and models use of technology, models behaviours of a lifelong learner) for the purpose of creating an environment where staff and students are successful; observe, counsel, and motivate staff toward performances to attain the educational goals of the District.

  13. Promotes the use of assessment data (e.g. monitors student progress, conducts and uses assessment data to guide instruction, uses academic support systems) for the purpose of increasing student achievement.

  14. Represents the school within community forums for the purpose of maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals and/or assisting with issues related to the school environment.

  15. Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

  16. Attends chair meetings (e.g. curriculum, safety, site advisory, special district committees, etc.) as needed for the purpose of coordinating activities and ensuring that outcomes achieve school, district, and/or state objectives.

  17. Maintains an educational philosophy and school climate which encourages a cooperative and participant attitude on the part of all staff and students.

  18. Attends professional conferences, seminars, and workshops in education and/or educational administration as per master agreement and/or Superintendent.

  19. Performs the job duties for any position to which the Assistant Principal is laterally transferred during the term of the Assistant Principal’s employment contract.

  20. Attends work as scheduled and arrives in a timely manner.

  21. Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred; experience with second language learners.

  2. Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups.

  3. Perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. 

  4. Analytical, interpersonal, diplomacy, organizational, leadership, supervisory, and management skills; apply assessment instruments.

  5. Planning and managing projects; prepare and maintain accurate records.

  6. Verbal and written communication skills (e.g. verbal, written, listening, and processing); quality customer service skills.

  7. Work independently under board organizational policies to achieve organizational objectives.

  8. Utilization of resources from other work units.

  9. Ability to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events.

  10. Routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; work with data of widely varied types and purposes; operate data software utilizing a variety of standardized methods.

  11. Flexibility to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; In working with others, independently problem solving to analyze issues and create action plans.

  12. Specific abilities to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: assess learning outcomes; adapt curriculum and programs to meet the needs of students; provide an effective learning environment that encourages student based motivation; communicate with culturally diverse groups, students, staff, and parents; create and maintain a climate of respect; establish effective relationships; promote a positive learning environment for students that involves staff and parents to promote high student achievement; utilize current technology; work as a part of a team; work with detailed information/data from various sources; advocate for the site.

  13. Perform advanced math, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions.

  14. Working knowledge of policies, regulations and/or laws, and stages of child development.

  15. Promot child-centred environment; knowledgeable of age-appropriate activities, effective practices, and technology.

  16. Working knowledge of school system to include classroom experience.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Masters degree in Education required; Doctorate preferred. At least five years of experience in teaching required, school administration preferred. Administrative Endorsement required. Demonstrated experience in a culturally diverse educational setting. Any equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that meets the minimum requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Ability to attend and preside over classrooms and meetings. Ability to travel with students, faculty, and staff throughout District. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
