About the Division of Public Health:

The NC Division of Public Health (DPH) works to promote and contribute to the highest possible level of health for the people of North Carolina – Everywhere, Everyday, Everybody.
Summary:
The Environmental Program Consultant is the principal investigator (PI) for the CDC-funded Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) program, currently funded at $500K annually and involving the supervision of two additional permanent employees plus occasional temporary employees or interns. The position will lead the implementation of the five step BRACE framework including 1) forecasting climate impacts and assessing vulnerabilities, 2) projecting disease burden, 3) assessing public health practices, 4) developing and implementing a climate and health plan, and 5) evaluating impact and improving quality of activities. These activities are conducted in collaboration with impacted communities across North Carolina and involve understanding and responding to community needs and priorities. As PI, the position will also be responsible for completing grant deliverables as required and managing operational tasks for the grant. Tasks may include literature reviews, epidemiologic data collection and analysis, and data visualization in collaboration with the NC Environmental Public Health Tracking Program. Public health interventions will be coordinated with other state, local, and federal agencies. The position will help to support DHHS actions in response to Executive Orders 80, 246, and 271, and 292 which aim to reduce greenhouse gas production, promote climate resilience, and promote environmental justice across the state. The work is performed independently under the supervision of the OEEB Branch Head.To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following:
  • Knowledge of health impacts of climate change and other environmental conditions.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology principles and data analysis methods.
  • Experience developing a public health program and coordinating the work of others.
  • Experience using Excel, databases, or other data management tools.
  • Experience working with the public, government agencies, and community organizations. 
  • Experience developing and presenting educational materials to professional and community groups.
Management Preferences:
  • Experience conducting community-based research or public health practice.
  • Experience working in climate change or environmental justice topics.

Master's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience related to the area of assignment;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
