Job Summary

  • To provide custodial and housekeeping to nine academic and administrative buildings.
  • To assist department, staff and students by providing resources to clean, move, rearrange or otherwise accommodate requests that will assist in functioning of the physical area they occupy.
  • To provide or seek assistance in providing a safe and secure environment. To make minor repairs and report to supervisors major repairs, vandalism or damage.
  • This is a weather essential position.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents and equipment.
  • Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents such as disinfectants, glass cleaner and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely.
  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively and operate safely and to make minor repairs.
  • The ability to follow simple oral and written assignments, perform assigned tasks with limited work direction and keep simple records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ability to follow oral and written directions with a high degree of accuracy is essential.
  • The ability to get along with co-workers and supervisors, to treat co-workers, supervisors, students, and customers with respect and courtesy and to refrain from abusive or insubordinate behavior is essential.
  • The ability to think and work independently and use good sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of janitorial/custodial techniques, materials, equipment, and a basic knowledge of physical plant hardware use and operation.
  • The ability to make minor repairs, adjustments, provide preventive and routine maintenance on hardware, cleaning equipment, furniture, and room accessories.
  • The ability to properly recognize and independently use basic hand tools is essential.
  • The ability to work outside in adverse weather conditions on occasion is required.
  • The ability to work on scaffolds and ladders is required.
  • The ability to keep written records is required.
  • The ability to work overtime is required.
  • An essential function of the general maintenance worker position is the ability to appear for work and to complete tasks within established timelines.

Physical Requirements

Ability to meet physical demands including frequent bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting up to 40-60 lbs.

Additional Requirements

Background check required.

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
