Job Summary

This position provides the Center for Advanced Aviation (CAA), Professional Pilot and Helicopter programs, with tutoring, classroom assistance, student training, testing, record keeping, safety, security and technical support for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified programs. The incumbent will serve as a Certified Flight Instructor, Chief and / or Assistant Chief Pilot (as required by FAA 141 Certification), and is responsible for direct, one to one flight instruction and leading students through: FAA required stage checks, preparation for end of course tests and proficiency checks. The CLA will be present and provide guidance to students during all pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight inspections and during all student flights. As required by the FAA, the CLA will be available by phone, radio, or other electronic means, when student flight training occurs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post Secondary or industry certificate/diploma/degree or relevant licensure as a FAA 141 Certified Flight Instructor, Assistant Chief Instructor or a Multi Engine Instructor

AND

  • One year of teaching and/or tutoring as a Certified Flight Instructor of initial Certified Flight Instructor Candidates

OR

  • 4 years of work experience as a FAA 141 Certified Flight Instructor, Assist Chief Instructor, or a Multi Engine Instructor where no industry standard.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold a commercial pilot or airline transport pilot certificate and a current flight instructor certificate. The certificates must contain the appropriate aircraft category, class, and instrument ratings if required for the category and class of aircraft used;
  • Flight training experience as a certified flight instructor, as a commercial or military pilot training program, or a combination thereof that must include:

1 year and a total of 250 flight hours; or

500 flight hours.

  • The flight instructor instrument rating or rating with instrument privileges must include:

At least 50 hours of flight time under actual or simulated instrument conditions;

At least 500 hours as pilot in command;

  • Instrument flight instructor experience, acquired as either a certificated flight instructor-instrument or an instructor in a military pilot flight training program,

1 year and a total of 125 flight hours; or

200 flight hours;

  • For a course of training other than one leading to the issuance of a recreational or private pilot certificate or rating, or an instrument rating or a rating with instrument privileges, an assistant chief instructor must have:

(1) At least 1,000 hours as pilot in command; and

(2) Flight training experience, acquired as either a certificated flight instructor or an instructor in a military pilot flight training program, or a combination thereof, consisting of at least 11⁄2 years and a total of 500 flight hours; or 750 flight hours.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Additional Requirements

This position requires successful completion of the following:

  • In accordance with the Department of Transportation requirements, safety-sensitive workers shall complete pre-employment drug and alcohol tests and will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and return to duty drug and alcohol testing.

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State‘s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
