Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. generally, with one day off during the week in order to be present at three weekend Masses, three weekends out of the month. Hours are flexible, may vary based on church needs, and duties may require nights and weekend work.

Description

Summary: The Liturgical Assistant works efficiently to aid the Director of Liturgy in organizing and executing the duties and functions of the liturgy throughout the liturgical year. This detail-oriented, pastoral service demands responsible discipleship in leading, as well as, accepting direction from the Church and the pastor. The ideal candidate will be someone who pursues knowledge and beauty, seeks to attain wisdom, and operates with humility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Director of Liturgy with planning all liturgical activities/celebrations to ensure integrity of the liturgical year.
  • Assist with the overall direction of liturgical ministers, to include development and training.
  • Facilitate coordination with various ministries that support the liturgical environment.
  • Work closely with music ministers in preparing liturgies.
  • Update operating procedures and scripts for liturgical events/activities.
  • Assist with the planning, coordinating, and overseeing of reconciliation services.
  • Assist with the coordination, recruiting, training, and scheduling of all liturgical ministers, to include altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, ushers, greeters, art & environment personnel, the parish liturgy team, etc.
  • Assist with art and environment of the Sanctuary, Reconciliation Room, Day Chapel and Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.
  • Assist in development and training of ministers who visit homebound, the hospitals, etc.
  • Maintain contact with parishioners on a regular basis to keep apprised of who in community are ill and in need of special care, to include arranging for anointing, spiritual and emotional support and reception of the Eucharist.
  • Communicates with all whose work affects or is affected by liturgical celebrations: facilities staff, faith formation personnel, parish administration, etc.
  • Assist with planning funerals, including, but not limited to: meeting with the family, planning vigil services, planning the funeral mass or service, coordinating with the funeral home, coordinating with music ministry, arranging for liturgical ministers, coordinating with Caring & Sharing, and providing assistance needed by the family. 
  • Assist Director of Liturgy with maintenance of current records related to liturgical ministries.
  • Assist Director of Liturgy in ordering and maintaining an inventory for all church celebrations: candles, wine, vestments, altar supplies, etc.
  • Work with assigned staff to organize and structure volunteers as needed.
  • Assist in collaborating with other organizations as assigned (e.g. with Archdiocesan events held at St. Mark the Evangelist).
  • Engage in collaborative projects within the parish and in the community as assigned by Director of Liturgy.
  • Conduct phone/virtual appointments as needed.
  • Participate in parish-sponsored functions.
  • Must be sensitive to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Responsible for protecting the confidentiality of any information or material obtained in the service with the organization to include but not limited to: names and information; services rendered; donors names and gifts; internal and external investigations or results of any investigations; and financial information.
  • Take a solution-oriented approach in interactions and undertakings, as well as, being a team member that promotes collaboration and commitment to the Mission and Vision of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Liturgy. 

Requirements

 Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, preferably in liberal arts or social sciences.
  • Experience: One-three years of service in ministry, preferably in a parish or educational setting. 
  • Supports and adheres to the religious standards, policies and procedures of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Adherence to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Morals policy is mandatory.
  • Must demonstrate ability of serving collaboratively with other members of the parish staff. Must be willing to communicate and coordinate with members of the parish community with whom one may interact.
  • Must have good written and verbal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to meet parish goals and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate to various levels of office staff, ministry leaders, parishioners and guests. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment, fostering a positive work environment.
  • Must be proficient in word processing and use of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and MS SharePoint.
  • Hired personnel will serve a 90-day evaluation and probationary period.
  • Meet all Archdiocesan employment requirements.
  • Provide proof of valid driver’s license and insurance, and possess reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Physical Demands/ Work Environment: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee may occasionally lift and or move up to 20 pounds. The noise level is low in the environment.
