The primary purpose of the position is to plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator and the Medical Director, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
The Director of Nursing Services is delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties. In the absence of the Medical Director the DNS is charged with carrying out the resident care policies established by this facility.
Essential Functions:
· Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the Home's philosophy, mission, and policies: faithfully adheres to all policies, procedures, and work practices
· Required to read the booklet on the Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters, in order to understand the spirit and philosophy of the Home
· Consults with the Administrator as often as necessary to resolve problems or concerns: advises the Administrator of resident or personnel needs or problems
· Plans, organizes, and directs nursing administration of all resident care: ultimately assures each resident of a clean, comfortable, and safe environment
· Makes rounds frequently on all levels of care to determine effective nursing care approaches
· Determines / schedules the utilization of staff in order to provide effective nursing care on a 24-hour basis
· Responsible and accountable for (delegating) hiring and evaluating nursing personnel
· Responsible and accountable for (delegating) orientation, instruction, and general development of nursing personnel
· Responsible and accountable for counseling, suspending, terminating nursing personnel who violate the Home's policies or who fail to meet Department qualifications, standards, or policies
· Participates in planning and budgeting for nursing services concerning staff hours and material resources: monitors the effectiveness of the utilization of these resources
· With Administrator/Assistant evaluates new products related to resident care: helps determine cost and advisability of purchasing such products
· Responsible and accountable for (delegating) the development of Nursing Care Plans for residents which include rehabilitative and restorative needs, ADL needs, need for outside resources, etc. in cooperation with other Departments: attends care plan meetings
· Participates in coordination of resident services through Departmental and other appropriate meetings
· Assists in providing for the spiritual needs of residents: notifies appropriate clergy
· Performs duties of Staff Nurse, Medication Technician, or Nursing Assistant when an emergency arises
· Visits critically ill residents daily
· Visits residents frequently in order to maintain an open communication and discern problems / concerns
· Assists in emergency care of residents, employees, and visitors involved in Accidents / Incidents while on the job or on the premises
· Is available, or provides a qualified person, to be on call
· Conducts / participates in fire, safety, and disaster plans and drills
· Participates in orientation and in-service programs required by law and mandated by the Home
· Responsible and accountable for (delegating) the development of Nursing standards, policies, and procedures for the Home
· Communicates admissions / transfers / discharges / room changes to all Departments (may delegate)
· Adheres to St. Agnes Home’s policies and procedures, including those covering privacy and security in compliance with HIPAA regulations, and codes of conduct. Maintains confidentiality and respects residents’ privacy at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
