SLATE is Hiring a Communications Manager Near Washington, DC

Slate is seeking an energetic, media-obsessed communications professional to support publicity across Slate’s editorial and business divisions. The person in this role will work under the head of communications and with key stakeholders across the company. They will be responsible for helping to manage the overall day-to-day operations of Slate’s communications effort, extending the reach and impact of Slate’s editorial—including written and audio—and business divisions, and the company’s overall narrative and brand.

We are looking for someone who has a passion for news and entertainment, loves media relations, thrives in a fast-paced newsroom environment, and is inspired by Slate’s reporting and analysis across all platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the head of communications to help develop and execute on a robust day-to-day communications strategy
  • Identifying opportunities to build the Slate brand and business narrative with consumers, trade, and clients
  • Securing daily press coverage across television, radio, print, and digital outlets for a range of coverage areas
  • Pitching reporters and producers across major broadcast networks (including TV, radio, podcasts) daily
  • Cultivating strong relationships with producers and reporters, including maintaining media lists
  • Assisting with Slate events in addition to speaking engagements for Slate staff at external events
  • Drafting press materials, including pitches, press releases, briefings, and talking points, along with a weekly coverage report
  • Helping to develop and implement a creative internal communications strategy, including compiling press clippings and recaps for stakeholders across the company
  • Submitting Slate for awards and event panels
Qualifications
  • 4 years minimum experience in communications, preferably at a news organization, in media/entertainment/politics
  • Demonstrated success securing media coverage across various platforms (TV, print, web, radio)
  • Solid understanding of media and tech landscape, and a strong editorial sensibility
  • Previous experience with booking network appearances, as well as interacting with reporters on daily inquiries and media requests
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced news environment on deadline
  • Impeccable writing skills with the ability to author and produce clear and concise communications materials
  • Experience with handling setup and logistics for speaking engagements and events
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Obsession with news, politics, and entertainment greatly preferred

$70,000 - $90,000 a year
