The Director of Construction Operations provides the leadership, management and vision necessary for project management and field operations to ensure projects are selected, priced, staffed, scoped, and delivered successfully. This involves constant communication with the Regional and National Sector Leads, estimating/purchasing, project management and field execution.

Responsibilities

Bidding and Selection

  • Develop, innovate, and continuously improve on Construction Operations standard operating procedures including new approaches and delivery methods for all essential project health, project management, and field execution fundamentals
  • Collaborate with Regional Lead and Director of Estimating to determine go or no-go decision on all projects within region, and be the ultimate decision-maker on project-level resources assigned to prospective projects
  • Collaborate with Regional Lead to determine risk rating for owners or subcontractors
  • Collaborate with Director of Estimating, Regional Lead, National Sector Lead and CEO/COO when needed to determine pricing and to participate in the sales process on new project pursuits
  • Ensure sharing and use of best practices

Project Delivery

  • Work with the appropriate leadership (Regional Sector Lead, National Sector Lead), operations, and management teams to establish a project scope of work and ensure successful execution
  • Participate in budget lock meetings to ensure comprehensive view of resources, schedule, and team buy-in of profitability assumptions – for stronger connection through to CTCs and closeout
  • Ensure timely coordination and open communication among various design, construction, operations, and management team members throughout the project regarding cost, schedule, and budget
  • Coordinate and deploy preconstruction resources including VDC, scheduling, and director of preconstruction
  • Work with the finance and project management / project executive teams to review all CTC financial reports each month, and determine the WIP positioning, risk register status, downtime projections, hiring needs, and project operational health
  • Serve as point-person within the region to change-manage all project-related critical project deliverables as cascaded from the ELT (with strong communication, coalition-building, and partnership with in-region teammates and ELT members)
  • Oversees Special Projects division via management of the Director of Special Projects

People and Culture

  • Responsible and/or involved in the hiring, terminating, staffing and evaluation of the project team including the Project Executive, Project Manager, Construction Manager, Director of Field Ops, and Superintendent
  • Balance downtime and resource availability on staffing projects, in collaboration with RSLs
  • Has responsibility for career progression of PXs, PMs, CMs and Supers
  • Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and mentoring to the project team
  • Foster a culture of safety on job sites and in Shawmut offices; be a safety role model and hold others accountable
  • Coordinate and lead quarterly trainings for safety, project management, project executives, and senior leadership for continued learning and enrichment of (and connection between) our staff
  • Participate in industry networking or trade groups

Qualifications

  • Minimum 20 years construction operations experience as Project Executive, Sr. Project Manager, and/or Superintendent on large complex building projects
  • Education: Construction Related Bachelor’s Degree required or equivalent experience
  • Additional Role Specific Skills:
    • Extensive Knowledge of Scheduling, Site Logistics and Coordination, Materials / Means / and Methods
    • Detailed understanding and knowledge about our estimating processes and delivery methods
    • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills
    • Knowledge of contract types and deal structures
    • Experience with all phases of construction (preconstruction to closeout), and across all our sectors (education, cultural, healthcare, retail, hospitality, commercial, life sciences)
  • Extensive experience managing multiple layers of management with sizeable employee population
  • Complexity involved the management of multiple high impact initiatives toward broad corporate goals

NYC Base Salary Range: $250,000 – $300,000 The range stated is specific to New York City. Placement within the listed range depends on many factors including, but not limited to years of experience, project size capability (for Construction & Field roles) and internal company equity.
