San Diego Convention Center is Hiring an Accounting Manager Near San Diego, CA

Offer Range: ​​ $116,174 - $145,451​

Position Summary 

This position reports directly to the Controller and oversees the daily accounting activities, monitors workflow and procedures of staff and is responsible for producing timely and accurate financial reports. Ensures compliance with accounting standards, regulatory and internal compliance, and coordinates internal and external audits. Prepares capital and major maintenance expense reconciliations, asset tracking and depreciation, and overall project progress payments. Researches and analyzes business process to determine ways to correct problems through software enhancement needs or procedural changes. Provides support to Controller in establishing and meeting departmental and organizational objectives.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Reviews and approves cash transactions, balance sheet and expense reconciliations, journal entries, payroll/retirement processing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. 
  • ​Tracks capital expenditures and project/retention payments, processes asset acquisitions/disposals and depreciation, and related account reconciliations. 
  • ​Oversees and performs the month end-end and annual close activities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. 
  • ​Reviews budget to actual variances and prepares monthly explanations for commentary and note disclosures. Is able to effectively articulate underlying reasons and trends behind deviations from plan. 
  • ​Collaborates with Senior Finance Analyst to support internal and external budgeting/reporting requirements. 
  • ​Reviews monthly sales and use tax reports and state agency filings. 
  • ​Prepares training materials, coordinates/conducts training for new staff and identifies training needs for current staff. 
  • ​Supervises payroll and related transactions and tax filings. 
  • ​Completes, assesses and revises accounting processes. 
  • ​Understands the underlying purpose of recurring accounting functions and related documentation, and makes appropriate recommendations for improvement. 
  • ​Utilizes previous experience with systems to assess and recommend improvements to system workflows. 
  • ​Works with the Controller to identify and implement internal control enhancements. 
  • ​Works directly with external auditors and coordinates audit items with the team. 
  • ​Completes special projects and ad-hoc duties as assigned. 
  • ​Manages workload effectively by prioritizing responsibilities appropriately.​ 
  • Other duties may be assigned 

Supervisory 

​​Supervises Accounting Staff, such as Payroll, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Staff Accountant.​ 

Education and/or Experience 

  • ​​Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and a minimum of six years as an Accountant, with 3 years in a leadership capacity; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Independent audit experience desired. 
  • ​Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with Governmental Accounting Standards knowledge a plus.​ 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations 

CPA designation preferred. Advanced degree or certification (MBA, CMA, CFM, CSCA) a plus. ​ 

Software Experience 

  • ​​Intermediate user of MS Office, including Vlookup and pivot tables, etc. 
  • ​Proficiency with ERP and payroll systems 
  • ​Experience with Microsoft Business Central and UKG/Ulitmate Software a plus 

Other Skills and Abilities 

  • ​​Excellent communicator (written and verbal). Uses discretion with sensitive data (maintains confidentiality). 
  • ​Proven ability to extract, interpret and process data from systems. Designs user friendly processes and training materials. Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask and perform accurately under tight deadlines. Ability to work independently with little direction.​ 

Physical Demands 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times.​ 

Work Environment 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee’s work area is located in a suite of offices above a parking structure and does not have immediate access to windows. Indoor HVAC unit monitors and controls temperature and airflow. Lighting provided by overhead bulbs and lamps. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate and could include persons in the office suite walking past the offices engaged in conversation. Frequent computer use at a workstation. Frequent interaction with employees, clients, vendors, and the public via email, telephone, delivery correspondence, and/or face-to-face. While maneuvering throughout the facility and on the show floor, employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and equipment, such as forklifts and electric carts, as well as loud noises originating from the use of individual and multiple quantities of mechanical equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to exhaust fumes, airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock for both indoors and outdoors environments.
