Transportation Fleet Manager

Contract (223 Days)
FTE: 1.0
Anticipated Start: March 21, 2022

This position is benefits eligible

Salary range: $57,838 to $78,118 annually (42-K)

Notes: This position is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) pre-employment physical abilities test, pre-employment drug testing, and random drug and alcohol testing.

The job of Fleet Manager is done for the purpose/s of overseeing the operation of the bus garage, supervise shop personnel, and inspect, maintain, and overhaul school district buses, heavy duty equipment, and other vehicles so that they are always in a safe operating condition.

This position reports to the Transportation Manager

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Pass a criminal background check
  2. High school diploma or equivalent
  3. Valid Utah Driver's License and Evidence of Insurability
  4. Have or obtain a CDL License and Defensive Driving Instructor's Certificate within six (6) months of beginning position
  5. Work with limited supervision, prioritize, and meet strict deadlines and schedules
  6. Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, parents, and other district employees
  7. Adaptable to changing work priorities
  8. Able to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 75 pounds
  9. Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing; present information in front of small groups of people

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of pertinent transportation laws, codes and policies
  2. Basic computer ability in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  3. Attentive to details, including working with data and information

Essential Functions

  1. Attends meetings, trainings, etc. for the purpose of maintain skills and meeting certificate requirements of Bus Driver
  2. Communicates with administrators, personnel and outside organizations for the purpose of coordinating activities, resolving issues and conflicts, and exchanging information
  3. Conducts service meetings for the purpose of updating drivers and mechanics on the latest equipment
  4. Confers with others (e.g. department supervisor and support staff, etc.) for the purpose of establishing day to day maintenance activities and ensuring the proper and efficient maintenance and repair of district school buses and other vehicles
  5. Develops long and short range transportation plans/programs (e.g. buses, bus routes, work schedules, emergency response plans, boundary changes, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the district's resources are effectively utilized
  6. Diagnoses bus malfunctions (e.g. engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering mechanism, electrical systems, fuel injections systems, wheel bearings, etc.) for the purpose of identifying necessary repairs and providing an ongoing preventive maintenance program
  7. Drives buses for the purpose of diagnosing malfunctions and serving as a substitute driver when needed
  8. Estimates materials and/or equipment needed for the purpose of ensuring the timely and cost effective completion of projects
  9. Fabricates equipment and parts for the purpose of meeting specialty needs and/or replacing customized, discontinued, and/or unavailable materials
  10. Inspects equipment and the work completed by other people for the purpose of ensuring work quality standards are met and identifying preventative maintenance needs
  11. Maintains a variety of records (e.g. MSDS sheets, OSHA records, maintenance reports, work orders, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and ensuring compliance with district, state, and federal requirements
  12. Maintains regular and predictable attendance for the purpose of fulfilling job requirements efficiently and effectively
  13. Maintains vehicles, shop, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring vehicle and equipment availability in clean, safe operating condition that conforms to specifications
  14. Monitors vehicle factory updates, tools and shop areas for the purpose of keeping track of tools and maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  15. Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions
  16. Participates in coordinating vehicle repairs from Utah Highway Patrol inspections and twice yearly emissions inspections for the purpose of documenting activities and ensuring compliance with district, state and federal requirements
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  18. Prepares reports and written materials related to assigned activities and personnel (e.g. estimates, actual costs, work order status, time sheets, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information
  19. Procures equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items to complete assigned functions efficiently
  20. Recommends plans, procedures, and/or specific actions for the purpose of addressing department goals, objectives, and work-related needs
  21. Respond to emergency and/or "on call" issues that may arise outside of regular work hours
  22. Supervises assigned personnel and the day-to-day bus maintenance activities and operations for the purpose of ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner while maximizing the efficiency of the workforce
  23. Tests defective equipment (e.g. handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, pressure gauges, etc.) for the purpose of diagnosing malfunctions using test instruments
  24. Trains assigned personnel on procedures used for general maintenance repair for the purpose of developing their professional capacity and safety awareness
  25. Transports a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials where required

Other Functions

  1. Assist other personnel as may be required (e.g. coordinate vehicle repairs, Utah Highway Patrol inspections, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.
