General:

The Learning Specialist serves as a member of the Academic and Student Support team within the department of Student SUCCESS at Roxbury Community College. This role will provide targeted support to students currently in, who have graduated from or otherwise identify as English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and other students with learning needs, including students with disabilities. In addition to first assessing students' current academic learning styles and abilities, the Learning Specialist will support students with attaining foundational skills including but not limited to: reading strategies, exam preparation, study skills, academic writing, and overcoming academic challenges.

The Specialist will work with a team of advisors and other specialists to provide holistic support to students. In addition to deep experience as a Learning Specialist in an urban setting, the ideal candidate must engage in deep collaboration with the SUCCESS team and implement a program in support of the position's mission to create both preventative and ameliorative measures to support RCC's students with acquiring academic skills and increasing the college's overall retention. The ideal candidate should have extensive experience supporting first generation students, ESOL students, and students with disabilities.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work closely with the SUCCESS Department, particularly the ESOL Academic Advisor and SUCCESS Advisors to provide support services and success planning for ESOL students, students with learning differences, and students requesting additional academic intervention.
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide workshops and individualized support in instructional strategies to successfully engage students with learning differences
  • Dedicate 40-50 percent of time diagnosing and creating intervention strategies in support of students.
  • Identify students in need of intrusive success coaching and work collaboratively with the ESOL or SUCCESS advisors to provide them with skills including; executive coaching, time management, campus resource planning, etc.
  • Collaborate with Student Life and Student SUCCESS to implement universally beneficial enhancements to make programs inclusive of students with learning differences including: New Student Orientation, Workshops, Testing Center, Student Accessibility Services, Clubs/Programming, etc.
  • Provide support to students during New Student Orientation who are seeking communication support and clarification on program selection.
  • Support SUCCESS Advisors with Skill Building workshops and ESOL Advisors with Language Cafes.,
  • Support RCC and the SUCCESS department in creating inclusive programming, which enhances student experiences and increases a sense of community and belonging within the institution.
  • Assist students with academic advising during high traffic periods including orientations and open registration blocks
  • Track student meetings and updates in Tiger Paw, Bookings, and other data collection programs. Organize and maintain all records of communication.
  • Analyze records and provide reports when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
  • Masters in Education, English, ESOL, Psychology, Counseling, or closely related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience teaching ESOL or Students with Disabilities highly preferred
  • Experience working in schools or higher educational institution
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to run workshops and engage large audiences
  • Multilingual background, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, or Haitian Creole strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with working with a highly diverse student body and work force and an unwavering commitment to equitable and inclusive practices.
  • Familiarity and willingness to learn new technologies such as MS Office, Adobe and creation of digital resources, EAB Navigate, Jenzabar, and others.
Additional Information:

Salary Range: This is a full-time, MCCC position (37.5 hrs), with full benefits.

Compensation: Starting Salary for this position is per the MCCC Grade 5 Professional Staff Salary Grid, salary is commensurate with Education and Experience in accordance with the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement.
