Rockefeller University is Hiring a Research Assistant | Laboratory of Molecular Biology Near New York, NY

Organization Overview

Our research is aimed at the identification of molecular mechanisms that control development and dysfunction of the mammalian cerebellum. We have chosen to study the cerebellum because it is a complex and highly stereotyped structure in which major pattern formation and functional organization occur postnatally. During the past century, classical neuroanatomical studies have very precisely described the complex events that must occur for formation of this brain structure, providing what might be considered as the most detailed information available concerning the development of a given brain region. An extensive literature has documented the importance of cell-cell interactions in the development and maintenance of normal cerebellar architecture, although the mechanisms mediating these interactions remain unknown. Identification of these mechanisms, and analysis of their functions throughout the central nervous system (CNS),are major priorities of the Heintz laboratory.

Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work on a project that will study the molecular basis of selective cellular vulnerability in Huntington's disease. The goal of this project is to identify novel strategies to delay onset and/or slow progression of the disease.

Responsibilities

The person who will join our team will be responsible for:

  • Preparing human brain samples (FFPE or frozen) for chromogenic and fluorescent immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization
  • Preparing solutions
  • Performing routine stains
  • Cover slipping slides
  • Data entry

The opportunity to learn cutting-edge tissue-clearing techniques for 3D histology as well as an opportunity to learn how to operate a modern light-sheet microscope will be available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Experience embedding and sectioning tissue is required as is familiarity with brightfield and confocal microscopes
  • Familiarity with quantitative tissue analysis software such as Fiji (ImageJ) or HALO Imaging Software is a plus
  • Candidate must be organized, have good communication skills, and keep clear, accurate records
