Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Director Research Laboratory Operations.


Director, Research Laboratory Operations, Strategy and Planning, reports directly to the Associate Dean, Basic Science Research Operations and is responsible for planning and directing research laboratory operations for the research portfolio as assigned. In this capacity, shall be responsible for coordinating and managing support for institutional laboratory operations in the research enterprise and scientific core facilities including but not limited the Research Laboratory Operations (RLO) unit, the Emergency Management & Research Resilience unit (including EOP and emergency management and research resilience planning and responses to emergent situations). Responsible for supporting the development and coordination of all projects related to research space renovation, relocation and reassignment / repurposing with RED&F, the Division of Advanced Research Technologies (DART), Medical Center IT and the Office of Science and Research (OSR) leadership. Further responsible for BSRO unit operational and capital budget development and management, faculty on- and off-boarding processes as they relate to space, equipment and lab readiness, policy development as it relates to research operations, and supporting other special projects.

Job Responsibilities:

      1. OSR Research Laboratory Operations staff management -supervisory responsibility for research laboratory operations (RLO) unit responsible for the research operations within the NYULH research building portfolio, owned and leased.
        1. Develops, reports and assesses key performance indicators for the RLO team; utilizes these metrics to assess resource needs and team performance.
        2. Responsible for annual operating budget development for RLO, RSS, and EM & ER components of the Basic Sciences research operations portfolio.
        3. Responsible for RLO team member portfolio management and balancing- assignment of responsibilities to RLO managers and assistant director
      2. RLO business owner to REDF Space planning / project management team
        1. Responsible for monitoring, aggregating and reporting on project timelines for all lab space-related projects that impact the research enterprise
        2. Responsible for collaborating with REDF PM / space planning team to create and maintain shared project plans across RLO / REDF projects (e.g. Responsibility Table and Communication Plans) and Project Data Sheet for each project, including pre and post project meetings.
        3. Responsible for tracking and managing faculty on-boarding / off-boarding activities as they relate to space, equipment and other variables associated with BSRO unit.
        4. Oversee development and maintenance of up-to-date knowledge base for all assigned project(s), including analysis of research community needs and resources required to fulfill those needs, research facility asset allocation and assignment. Provides recommendations and guidance to OSR Leadership on project and resource prioritization.
      3. Analytics
        1. Facility management and space usage analytics in support of space planning activities as well as F&A proposal submission(s).
        2. Monitor, report and advise on data from IACUC, AMS, IBC, Lab Occupancy, Lab membership dashboards.
      4. Asset Management
        1. Support Capital equipment tagging, tracking and management with Finance; serves as OSR and Research Mission lead in research equipment and asset management for NYU GSoM
        2. BSRO owner of capital asset management process improvement
      5. Supply Chain process improvement business owner / liaison
      6. Supports preparation of annual BSRO operating and OSR capital equipment budgets in conjunction with OSR and central Finance teams
      7. Prioritization of deliverables; actively manages issues, issue escalation and proactively identifies alternative strategies in collaboration with core team members to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies which impact key milestones for initiatives for the Research Mission
      8. Informs OSR Leadership and stakeholder groups of deliverables and timelines, project developments and ensures completion according to timelines
      9. Prepares high-quality reports (financial, project, etc.) for OSR BSRO leadership on program and project status and issues.
      10. Investigates complaints and ensures resolution; ensures issues are resolved.
      11. Reports to Associate Dean, Basic Science Research Operations
      12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS1. Excels in cooperation, collaboration and communication with all NYULH employees2. May communicate directly with OSR senior leadership, PIs and other scientists, coordinates delivery of results to outside collaborators also.3. Communicates carefully and clearly with others in order to respond appropriately, to answer questions and obtains requested information.4. Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner.5. Maintains the confidentiality of all research information.JUDGEMENT / DECISION-MAKING 1. Is able to recognize and manage problems as they occur, and through the application of appropriate policy/procedure, determines and/or recommends the appropriate solution.2. Must be able to troubleshoot.3. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties; asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy.4. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS in Biology, chemistry or relevant science or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience in academic, pharma or biotech environment. 7-10 years of research laboratory management experience in pharma, biotech or academic research environment. Individual should have a expertise with the capabilities, requirements, uses and physical conditions for active research laboratories. Should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact productively with leadership, faculty and staff to identify and resolve problems. Prior experience in building/facility support and management required. Excellent project and program management skills and extensive knowledge of facilities management, complex operating systems and processes required. Strong communication skills and relationship/team building skills. Excellent judgement and reasoning ability enabling problem-solving and issue resolution, with a variety of options in varying situations. Ability to work independently, take initiative and make decisions with in-depth understanding. Responsible for setting and meeting department deadlines in alignment with research operations strategic and operational plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS, PhD or equivalent relevant degree including MBA and experience applicable to research laboratory operations management ; preferred research operations management experience in biotech, Pharma or academic research environment.
  • Strong preference for individuals with experience working on major infrastructure projects and management of complex academic research portfolios.
  • Must be able to work effectively and lead within matrixed program and project teams.
  • Strong presentation and writing skills are a priority.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $138,098.48 - $210,142.66 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
