Launched in 2020, we surround these entrepreneurs with the resources and network they need for seed capital, state-of-the-art lab space, a community-based ecosystem, and access to experts in their fields and prospective investors and partners. Overview:

Portal Innovations is seeking a Director of Business Development in our new location in Houston. Portal’s Houston lab is located in Helix Park, which is located within the Texas Medical Center. We are actively searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team. As a Director of Business Development at Portal Innovations, you will play a vital role in expanding our network and identifying and recruiting innovative life sciences companies to join Portal as a member company. The Director of Business Development will have an understanding of the life science ecosystem in Houston and will play a key role in developing the ecosystem and programming activities at Portal to help support key stakeholders and identify innovative life sciences companies. By joining our team as a Director of Business Development, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the life science industry in Texas and contribute to the success of groundbreaking life sciences startups.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the efforts to identify new member companies. Continuously build a strong pipeline of new members and portfolio companies to join us in our Helix Park lab
  • Lead negotiations with potential members and oversee the sales and closing process. Work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Lab Operations to identify space needs and fit. You will need to understand members’ current and future needs to develop a plan for growth and/or renewed membership;
  • Foster key relationships and partnerships with local life science ecosystem stakeholders (universities, corporations, consultants, VCs, vendors, etc.);
  • Establish and promote a robust ecosystem community not only in the Portal Houston space but also in the Houston Bio Tech and Innovation ecosystem;
  • Support strategic programming and partnerships as our location ramps up. Address the needs and interests of Portal’s member companies and participate in the organization and execution of such programs;
  • Collaborate with potential sponsors who wish to support Portal’s programming in Houston and to gain a deep understanding of their goals and objectives. Foster meaningful programming partnerships and create value for all parties involved by aligning their interests with our network of innovators; and
  • Collaborate with other departments (on site and nationally) throughout the member company life cycle to ensure delivery of a world class experience (from space discovery to onboarding and off-boarding, programming, marketing and prospective Portfolio companies).

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred;
  • Experience in the life science industry (pharma, biotech, med device);
  • 4 years of relevant experience in business development, strategic partnerships, or sales;
  • Proven experience building and managing relationships;
  • Strong work ethic, organized and detail oriented;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team as well as independently; and
  • Flexibility and adaptability to grow as the role evolves.
