Data Analyst is a full-time position that will help develop a more comprehensive view into PBS KIDS' audience demographics, viewing and gaming behavior, and market dynamics, in order to inform the development of PBS KIDS game-related strategies. Early on in the project, in consultation with PBS KIDS strategic leadership, and in partnership with PBS Business Intelligence, the role will develop a work plan and roadmap of prioritized research questions. The plan will also explore opportunities to capture value more fully from existing PBS KIDS platform data as well as third-party data and insights services. From there, the role will collaborate with PBS KIDS Learning and Research, and PBS Business Intelligence, to conduct custom data manipulation and analyses as needed to answer the research questions. The Data analyst will work closely with project staff to refine approaches and take advantage of opportunities that present themselves along the way, as well as develop, document, and disseminate findings from the analyses to key stakeholders. Finally, the role will develop a roadmap and set of recommendations for how to move this work forward in the future beyond the scope of the present grant project.Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Work with key PBS KIDS and Business Intelligence partners to develop a research agenda, consisting of a prioritized list of well-defined and realistically answerable research questions. These questions should be considered suitable by key project stakeholders to productively inform the development of PBS KIDS strategies related to the development and distribution of PBS KIDS games and game-related videos. This will involve developing a high-level understanding of the PBS KIDS gaming business, and of where current intelligence ends and open questions begin. To help drive prioritization, it will also require working with stakeholders to develop an understanding of the questions that are most relevant and important to PBS KIDS and Business Intelligence leadership.
Work with key PBS KIDS and Business Intelligence partners to develop a plan for the usage of existing PBS platform data, and third-party service data. This will involve building a portfolio of available data to document how a variety of data sources can be integrated to innovate PBS KIDS ability to answer research questions. Data sources will include PBSKIDS.org and the PBS KIDS Games and Video apps, Google Analytics, YouTube Analytics, Dubit Trends, Kids Insights, MRI, Nielsen, custom surveys, data from the PBS KIDS Learning Analytics Platform, as well as other first- and third-party data and insights providers. It will also include developing methods to efficiently relate and integrate these disparate sources in meaningful ways to innovate PBS KIDS' ability to answer the research questions.
Partner with key PBS KIDS and Business Intelligence partners to conduct custom data analysis according to the plan. This will involve applying myriad forms of analysis to a portfolio of available data to answer questions around market, audience, demographics, reach, engagement, impact and more. As this work proceeds, this role will also support efforts to evaluate and assess potential analysis approaches against child safety and privacy considerations to ensure PBS KIDS continues to deliver on our promise of providing a safe environment for all children.
Support the development of data specifications, conduct data QA, and use PBS KIDS data collection infrastructure to collect detailed interaction log data from new City Island games funded by this project, and conduct a detailed analysis of user behaviors and play patterns.
Develop, document, and disseminate findings from the analyses to key project stakeholders.
Develop a plan for how to best continue the data analysis work after the end of the DIG project. This will involve taking stock of the progress accomplished, the challenges and opportunities identified along the way, and laying out a high-level work plan for the future that extends the value of the work.
Requirements for success:
Deep commitment to the safety and privacy of children. Knowledge of or interest in learning about COPPA and general children's privacy and safety best practices.
Bachelor's degree or greater in data science, computer science, or comparable scientific or technical degree, or equivalent professional experience.
Minimum 3 years of professional or academic data analysis experience.
Strong analytics and data analysis skills.
Strong SQL coding skills.
Experience with data dashboarding and presentation tools (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau) and visualization libraries (e.g. matplotlib, ggplot).
Experience in at least one general-purpose programming language suitable for data analysis (Python, R, etc.)
Experience with conducting data quality assurance testing in the digital products space.
Ability to find creative ways to provide insights despite limitations in data or questions about accuracy.
Experience with Google Analytics data and its various nuances.
Great collaboration and stakeholder management skills, including planning, attention to detail, reading for comprehension, and follow through.
Strong ability to deeply consult with stakeholders to align intelligence needs with what is practically accomplishable given available data.
Great communication skills, including data storytelling, visualization, and presentation.
Interest in developing market and audience intelligence in the game development and distribution space.
Interest in developing interactive product intelligence using fine-grained log data from interactive experiences.
Understanding of hypothesis testing methods. Experience conducting hypothesis testing anddeveloping causal inferences a plus.
Desire to innovate organizational capabilities around answering novel types of questions through analysis, creative data combinations, and procurement of additional data.
Knowledge of data analysis libraries such as pandas or dplyr a plus.
Exposure to cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) a plus.
Experience working with Big Data processing platforms (e.g. Spark, BigQuery, etc) a plus.
