Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill three (3) part-time (approximately 24 hours per week) temporary Food Service Worker 1 positions for the Oregon 4-H Conference at the Education Center in the Division of Extension and Engagement at Oregon State University (OSU). These temporary Food Service Worker positions will go through September 30, 2024, and will be limited to 1,039 hours during this time period.
The position is a part of the OSU Extension 4-H Youth Development program. The Oregon 4-H Center is a rental facility approximately eight (8) miles from downtown Salem. It is a rural area and is not on public transportation lines. The 4-H Center offers spring outdoor school, summer camp and other retreat and user group activities.
Food service is an integral part of the outdoor school and camp experience. User groups requiring food service may range in size from 25 to 200. Flexibility, initiative, self-motivation, team work, and the ability to communicate and work under sometimes stressful conditions is essential.
The Food Service Worker performs a variety of food service activities as assigned in support of other kitchen staff and program needs. The 4-H Center kitchen may be fast paced with a variety of activities occurring simultaneously. This position is in a positive and caring work environment and makes a positive impact.

Key Responsibilities
The Food Service Worker embeds the commitment of the university to inclusive excellence in all interactions and duties performed and contributes to a safe, welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
50% Food Service and Food Preparation
Typical Tasks:
  • Assists higher-level staff in making cold sandwiches, toast, garden salads, and dressing for salads.
  • Cleans, cuts and chops vegetables and fruits.
  • Mixes beverages, make coffee, and slice desserts.
  • Assists staff members by preparing sack lunches, snacks and other special requests.
  • Maintains adequate supplies of dishes, cups, flatware, and napkins on the serving line.
  • Sets up and refills condiments dispensers, and food pans.
  • Ensures all food is prepared and presented in a quality and pleasing manner.
  • Collaborates with Cook 1 in preparation of meals to satisfy customer requests.
  • Adheres to all food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Assists with food storage per safety standards.
  • Maintains a welcoming attention to the needs of customers/guests.
40% Dishwashing and Cleaning Functions
Typical Tasks:
  • Clears dirty dishes and trays from tables.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, sinks, counters, fountains, and serving area.
  • Sweeps and mops floors; wipes spills.
  • Collects and removes cups.
  • Cleans coffee pots, blenders, pop machine dispensers, ice cream and hot chocolate machines and other commercial equipment.
  • Ensures that work surfaces, dishes, cooking equipment, and all kitchen/dining hall areas are clean and well-maintained.
  • Removes kitchen waste as per sanitation standards.
  • Performs other cleaning duties as assigned.
10% – Other Duties
  • Assists food service staff members with special meal functions by setting and decorating tables.
  • Attends and participates in all scheduled kitchen meetings and trainings.
  • Assists in all kitchen activities during shift.
  • Collaborates with others in the work area.
  • Exercises excellent people skills when in contact with clients, co-workers, and others.

What You Will Need
A valid Food Handler’s card, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Position is in a rural youth camp kitchen.
  • Typically, the schedule may be morning, afternoon and/or evening shift. May include weekend work as needed to meet the needs of customers. Includes long periods of standing.
  • Works with and around heat producing equipment such as ovens, steam kettle, grill, or other; works with sharp or bladed equipment such as knives, tomato slicer, meat/cheese slicer, box cutters, or other.
  • Lifts up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • Regular in-person contact with customers, delivery drivers and food suppliers to receive goods.
