Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill four part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and up to 40 hours during summer break) Forest Field Technical Assistant for the Forestry Department at Oregon State University (OSU).
The individual in this role will support the supervisor in gathering field data at timber harvest sites, forest equipment operations, and conducting stand mapping. This involves tasks such as characterizing vegetation, sampling soil, monitoring machine productivity, and gathering tree measurements for mapping purposes.
Position Duties
75% – Gather plot data for forest mapping verification
10% – Organize, weigh and dry tethered logging study soil samples in the field and lab settings
10% – Lay out tethered logging study corridors, collect soil samples and resistance data. Assist with Lidar collection of harvest area, post operation.
5% – Conduct detailed time study of tethered harvesting operations
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Practical knowledge of timber harvesting systems
  • Knowledge of forest operations and time study
  • Ability to walk across uneven terrain to tree plots and conduct basic tree measurements
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Students who have completed at least one of the following Oregon State University courses: FE 208, FE 370/37, FE440, FE 471, FOR 322, FOR 441, or Soil 205
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working conditions:
The work will occur on steep forest ground in a variety of weather conditions. Work schedule for the mapping data collection will be 8 days on, 6 days (Wednesday to Wednesday) off with a 10-hour workday schedule. During the tethered logging study, the schedule often depends on schedule of logging operations.
Overnight camping will be required
