Northeastern University is Hiring an Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor - First-Year Engineering - Boston Near Boston, MA

About the Opportunity The College of Engineering at Northeastern University invites applications to join the first-year engineering faculty. The First-year Engineering Program is transforming engineering education by striving to deliver first year (and potentially beyond the first year) courses that inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding engineering students and ready for future classes and the co-op program. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track position, as an Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor. Appointments are made on an annual 8-month basis, salary commensurate with experience. The main responsibility of this position is teaching first-year engineering students. The annual academic teaching load is six courses. Class sizes are capped to allow more personal interaction with our first-year students, thus the courses assigned are likely to be multiple sections of the same course. We teach our first-year students using a Cornerstone approach, where the emphasis on design and problem-solving using engineering tools and software has been integrated and applied in course themes that are project-based. Because of the diversity in disciplines within the first-year team, the development of new themes and projects (including service learning) to match each instructor’s interests is encouraged. The first-year faculty work as a team, developing course curricula and content, along with working together during the semesters on delivery and student interactions. All first-year faculty are involved in some work in the summer to prepare for the next year. There may be teaching and development activities in summer as needed; other summer teaching opportunities are also encouraged. There may be an opportunity for teaching, if desired and available, in engineering discipline courses, especially undergraduate courses if in agreement with first-year and discipline-specific department needs. The Assistant/Associate/Full Teaching Professor will also participate in department, university, and professional service activities as well as research activities, including, but not limited to advising undergraduate students, committee work, student recruiting, educational research, publications, presentations, and continuing education through the university Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research programs. This team works closely with the college’s academic advisors, with faculty in many departments and with each member of the team; filling a crucial role in equipping first-year students for success. The team environment is a crucial aspect of this role and will also be instrumental in providing support to new faculty. In addition, first-year faculty need to be willing to learn, try new approaches; be creative, adaptable and agile. A doctorate degree in engineering or closely related fields of science and engineering is required by the appointment start date. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, project-based learning, and mentoring. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment which is fundamental to a Northeastern University education. Please include with your application documents a cover letter; curriculum vitae; Statement of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging; Teaching Statement & Philosophy; and three letters of reference. Instructions for the statements are included below. Statement of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Please provide a statement of your commitment and/or contribution(s) that describes your past experience, activities, and/or future plans to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and the value proposition of belonging in your teaching, research, and service. Your statement should demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing marginalized communities in your field/community and be in alignment with both Northeastern’s mission and BEYOND 2025: The Academic Plan Paragraph 4.1 A Magnet for Diversity, and a Place of Belonging. A more developed and substantial plan is expected for senior candidates. Teaching Statement & Philosophy: Statement of Teaching Interests & Philosophy: Please summarize your past instructional and mentorship expertise, your pedagogical philosophy, your plans/goals for teaching (including existing and proposed courses), and your strategies for teaching and mentoring a diverse cohort of undergraduate and graduate students. Include a section discussing educational scholarship that you would conduct as part of your efforts in instruction and/or working with students. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be directed to Richard Whalen, Search Committee Chair, at r.whalen@northeastern.edu. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
