About the Opportunity Northeastern University’s College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) invites applications for open-rank (tenured or tenure-track) faculty positions in generative AI for creative applications in music, communications and design fields. We seek applicants with a record of innovation in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), a strong background in working with the algorithms and models pivotal to generative AI, and whose research engages critically and creatively with such fields. We are particularly interested in candidates in these specific areas: Generative AI and Sound Design: We seek candidates with a background in sound design and music technology. Areas of specialization may include generative audio/music, music production, sonification of data (including human motion), XR, interactive media (including computer generated imagery), and the performing arts. We are interested in candidates with the ability to enrich our current interdisciplinary curricula by developing courses in areas such as procedural sound design and generative AI for music. Generative AI and Conversation Design: We seek candidates with a background in communication design (including interpersonal, health and organizational communication) and/or human-computer interaction with a focus on conversation design. Areas of specialization may include conversational interface design, supporting civic conversations, psychology and health impacts of chatbot relationships, health behavior change, applications and innovations for AI tools for organizational communication and rhetoric, and applications of AI tools for interpersonal communication and decision support. We are interested in candidates with the ability to enrich our current interdisciplinary curricula by developing courses in areas such AI in organizations, AI for health and wellness, AI and civic conversations, and AI and interpersonal communication. These positions will have a primary tenure home in one of CAMD’s six schools and departments (Architecture, Art Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Music, and Theater), with expected joint appointment in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. Joint appointments and/or affiliations with other colleges and institutes at Northeastern University will be considered as appropriate. We have a particular interest in candidates with a primary appointment in Music, Communication Studies, or Art Design. Qualifications A PhD or terminal degree (e.g. MFA) in the candidate’s field (Acoustics, Sound and Music Computing, Signal Processing, Design, Game Design, Computational Media, XR, Cognitive Engineering, Machine Learning, Communication, or a related field relevant to the home department) is required by the appointment start date. The College is seeking to give excellent candidates across all demographics of society the opportunity, resources, and support to establish innovative and impactful research careers. This includes candidates at the earliest stages of their careers as well as those who are more established. For select candidates, there may be an option of a one- to two-year CAMD funded, mentored postdoc Fellow position, to allow candidates to ramp up their research programs before starting on the tenure track. Academic rank at the Associate Professor and Full Professor levels will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and scholarly excellence. Responsibilities Faculty members at Northeastern are expected to develop independent research programs that attract external funding; teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate level and contribute to innovative curricular paths; oversee students and postdocs in their area of research; and participate in service to the department, university, and discipline.
