SUMMARY:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) plays a pivotal role in providing both operational and programmatic support to New York Edge. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO is responsible for overseeing the financial analysis, planning, and accounting functions of the organization. This includes managing finances, ensuring compliance with contracts and regulations, and providing strategic direction on financial matters. The CFO will also build and lead a finance and accounting team, working collaboratively with all departments across the organization to support strategic objectives. A key aspect of the role involves providing strategic direction on expansion and growth, ensuring the financial stability and sustainability of New York Edge.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject-matter-expert regarding all finance and accounting matters

  • Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization. Oversee the coordination and activities of independent auditors ensuring all audit issues are resolved, and all 403(b) compliance issues are met, and the preparation of the annual financial statements is in accordance with U.S. GAAP and federal, state and other required supplementary schedules and information

  • Work with the CEO on the strategic vision related to finance and accounting.

  • Ensure adequate controls are installed, maintained and that substantiating documentation is in place and available for internal and external audits

  • Provide the CEO with an operating budget. Ensure programmatic success through cost analysis support, and compliance with all contractual and programmatic requirements. This includes: 1) interpreting legislative and programmatic rules and regulations to ensure compliance with all federal, state, local and contractual guidelines, 2) ensuring that all government regulations and requirements are in place and 3) monitoring compliance

  • Work collaboratively with the COO to ensure the organizations strategies are aligned with its financial goals, working together to develop and implement efficient business processes, manage budgets, and drive growth while maintaining financial stability

  • Oversee the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including but not limited to: organizational revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational and contract/grant budgets, recording and reporting of employee tax information, monitor accounts receivable to help determine and ensure cash flow, monitor accounts payable to assure the accuracy and effectiveness of organizational expenditures and their relationship to budget. 

  • Oversee, manage and establish strong banking relationships with partners of New York Edge Lines of Credit.

  • Attend Board and Subcommittee meetings; including being the lead staff on the Audit/Finance Committee.

  • Monitor banking activities of the organization

  • Investigate cost-effective benefit plans and other fringe benefits which the organization may offer employees and potential employees with the goal of attracting and retaining qualified individuals

  • Oversee the production of monthly reports including reconciliations with funders and pension plan requirements, as well as financial statements and cash flow projections for use by Executive Management, as well as the Audit/Finance Committee and Board of Directors

  • Assist in the design, implementation, and timely calculations of wage incentives and salaries for the staff

  • Work closely with Human Resources on compensation, benefits, and performance management.

  • Ability to build financial decks that lead the executive management team and board in engaging discussions

  • Oversee the maintenance of the inventory of all fixed assets, including assets purchased with government funds (computers, etc.) ensuring all are in accordance with federal regulations

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of Not-for-profit accounting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

  • Experience with technology conversion from MIPS to Sage Intact for financial management and reporting and knowledge of Salesforce.

  • General office software, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite as well as not-for-profit general 

ledger software, such as MIPS and payroll services including ADP.

  • Ability to foster and cultivate business opportunities and partnerships. The ability to communicate in 

a professional, knowledgeable and service-oriented manner and ensure staff do the same.

  • Ability to present financials to the Board of Directors under the direction of the CEO.

  • Excellent service skills; Work in a proactive manner with the internal work units of New York Edge and ensure the department team does the same 

  • Create and assess financial statements and budget documents

  • Recognize and be responsive to the needs of all clients of the organization, including funding 

organizations, the Board of Directors, service providers and local community advocates

  • Ability to build financial decks that lead the executive management team and board in engaging discussions

  • Build and train, supervise the finance and accounting team, fostering a collaborative management style.

  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form

Qualifications:

  • MBA degree in Accounting, Finance; CPA strongly preferred.

  • A minimum of 10 years of financial experience, with at least 5 years in a senior management role, preferably in a non-profit organization.

  • Strong understanding of non-profit finance, accounting standards, and compliance requirements.

  • Exceptional financial analysis, budgeting, and strategic planning skills.

  • Proven leadership abilities and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with the board, executive team, and department heads.
