Baltimore City Public Schools is Hiring a Lead Technician - Facilities Near Baltimore, MD

Lead Technician is a working supervisor position which performs, plans and supervises the general maintenance , cleaning, and operation of a school plant, facilities and grounds. This position is responsible for maintaining the safe operating standards in a school plant on a 24-hour basis and maintaining logs and records as required. Employees in this position are responsible for the correction of minor repairs and initiating work order requests to Facilities Maintenance & Operations.

Essential Functions
  • Plans and supervises the general routines and preventive maintenance, and daily operations of schools physical plant, and grounds (athletic, lawn and shrubs) for all facilities in the assigned region area.
  • Conducts routine inspections of facilities in assigned areas and reports conditions and develops action plans to correct deficiencies and initiate work orders.
  • Initiates work orders, including cost estimates of labor and materials in the computerized management maintenance system (CMMS) that monitors the operational maintenance issues and completion rate of work orders.
  • Provides and initiates work for maintaining the Building Maintenance Plan's (BMP) for facilities.
  • Checks boiler room to determine all equipment is operating properly and reports repairs as needed.
  • Inspects buildings, grounds, equipment and roof drains, and make minor repairs or initiate work orders for repairs to remedy defective, improper or inefficient conditions.
  • Makes routine repairs, adjustments, and emergency repairs such as clearing clogged plumbing fixtures and replacing electric fuses.
  • Checks playground equipment and areas for hazards and unsafe conditions.
  • Supervises the removal of snow from walks and parking lots.
  • Performs, assigns and supervises the work of maintenance personnel and assist in the general maintenance activity of a school plant.
  • Inspects classrooms, offices, hallways, etc., for proper maintenance and lighting.
  • Instructs employees in the proper use of building maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Requisitions and distributes building service materials and prepares reports on work hours and performance.
  • Opens, closes and secures facilities if needed.
  • Communicates with school administration on status of work orders and coordinates work activities.
  • Performs administrative and supervisory duties requiring effective verbal, written and computer communication skills. Complete written reports as requested.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board's policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Five years of practical experience in the facilities maintenance and operations of a facility. Direct experience in school plant operations and facilities preferred.
  • Plumbing, HVAC and general contracting certifications are preferred.
  • Valid State of Maryland driver's license
  • Proven ability to quickly gain knowledge of relevant Federal and State regulations and guidelines in the areas of facilities and maintenance.
  • Proven ability to quickly analyze problems, recommend and implement workable solutions.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with principals, teachers, administrators, and the general public.
  • Proven ability to ensure delivery of high levels of customer service to the schools throughout the district.
  • Proficient skill in the use of personal computers and relevant design and office applications.
  • Proficient in the knowledge and use of technical computer applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable building codes and standards, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Good interpersonal, presentation, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize ongoing and multiple projects, to address multiple tasks, technical issues, and contingencies at the same time.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with consultants, contractors, and City Schools personnel at all levels.
