Milo Foundation is Hiring a Human Resources Manager Near Richmond, CA

Are you a current or former HR professional who can help a compassionate nonprofit fulfill its mission? The Milo Foundation rescues adoptable dogs and cats from high-kill shelters and finds them safe and loving homes. We require a self-motivated and compliance-driven Human Resources Manager to direct and manage many aspects of our organization's HR needs. The successful candidate for this role must possess reliable expertise with current local, state, and federal labor laws and experience with nonprofit business functions. This manager will work directly and cooperatively with other managers and hourly employees as needed to ensure compliance, so that The Milo Foundation functions properly and safely and continues its lifesaving work for countless years to come.

HR Manager Responsibilities:

  • Attain a thorough understanding of the operations and goals of Milo Foundation to ensure seamless management of HR.
  • Work closely with Milo leadership to develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business objectives.
  • Oversee recruitment of employees in collaboration with senior management, including composing job descriptions and managing public postings on various job search websites and publications.
  • Assist and advise Milo managers with the processes and legal aspects of hiring, rewarding, disciplining, and firing.
  • Manage employee complaints and grievances and assist leadership with reaching best outcomes.
  • Manage employee onboarding and offboarding, including thorough and timely paperwork processing, the distribution and collection of required information, entering and updating employee data in the payroll service system, communicating effectively while following up with employees as needed, and more.
  • Issue, collect, keep well-organized, and securely maintain all employee paperwork according to HIPAA laws, Milo procedures and best practices.
  • Manage all aspects of employee benefits, including employee-related insurance, supplemental pay, audits, FMLA and other leave programs and processes, and more.
  • Advise and guide Milo leadership on current labor laws, and communicate the requirements to regular staff as needed.
  • Manage employee compliance with Milo policies and DOL requirements, including SHPT, break times, time clock reporting, and more.
  • Assist other managers with bi-weekly payroll preparation and submit accurate pay data bi-weekly to the organization’s payroll service.
  • Issue verbal and written discipline to employees who violate labor laws, in accordance with Milo policies and procedures.
  • Meet regularly and as needed with Milo’s Executive Director and/or other senior management to review staffing.
  • Generate employment and earnings reports as needed.
  • Meet with and present employment data and recommendations to Milo’s Board of Directors.
  • Ensure all updated labor posters available from government entities are displayed as required in Milo facilities.

HR Manager Requirements:

  • Certification and/or college degree in Human Resources Management.
  • 1 year minimum of documented, successful work experience in the HR field, particularly with nonprofit business.
  • Strong knowledge of HR principles, practices, and employment labor laws.
  • Knowledge of or experience with nonprofit animal rescue goals is a plus.
  • Ability to develop and implement operational practices to ensure HR compliance for Milo Foundation.
  • Highly computer literate, to obtain and share information and communicate effectively, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Proficient with HRIS and MS Office applications, and familiar with or able to quickly learn Milo’s HR systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to ensure employees understand and comply with what is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with individuals with different personalities, backgrounds, and lifestyles.
  • Focused and fair, performing with a high degree of professionalism, to ensure goals are met with minimal disruptions.
  • Strong leadership, self-motivation, work ethic, and problem-solving qualities.
  • Highly organized, with meticulous attention to detail, to manage all aspects of HR in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactively positive and compassionate nature.
