The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is seeking an Assistant Attorney General to join the General Counsel's Office (GCO) team. The GCO is involved in high-level executive decision making about policies, legal strategy, and operations within the AGO. Among its many responsibilities, the GCO manages the AGO's responses to Public Records Requests and the AGO's Records Retention process. This position represents a unique opportunity to implement appropriate records retention practices, work with the Records Access Officer in all phases of responding to public records request, and to assist the GCO in supporting lawyers and staff across the AGO.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction of the General Counsel and the Records Access Officer, the Assistant Attorney General will coordinate and implement the AGO's records retention policies and procedures. The Assistant Attorney General's primary responsibility will be to organize and digitize the archiving of the AGO's records and to ensure compliance across the Office with Massachusetts laws and the AGO's records retention procedures. Along with primary responsibility for the management of the AGO's records retention practices and procedures, the Assistant Attorney General will also assist in the timely and appropriate responses to the hundreds of public records requests received by the AGO annually, as well as monitoring developments in public records law by conducting legal research, attending court hearings, and assisting with public records litigation; and participating in the formulation of policies and executive decisions. The Assistant Attorney General will also work with the General Counsel to support the work of the Office by reviewing procurement documents and contracts, negotiating agreements, and responding to staff requests for legal advice and answers to ethical questions. The Assistant Attorney General will participate in forward-looking projects, as well, such as the development of internal policies to promote efficiency and increase support to the AGO divisions and implementation of effective records search protocols and records retention policies.
Location: The hired candidate may elect to work out of the Boston Office or one of the AGO's Regional Offices located in New Bedford, Springfield, and Worcester.
Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt
Salary: $78,586 to $117,879, commensurate with JD year and experience.

Job Qualifications:
Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.
