SREC Assistant Director Gr 4k-4 - Summer 2024

MSCR or Madison School & Community Recreation is Madison’s public recreation provider. We offer everything you would find in your typical community rec department in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming, arts & enrichment, adult & 50 fitness, sport leagues, outdoor pursuits and more. As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District(MMSD), we also provide afterschool and summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools.

Program Description:

Lead! Learn! Inspire! MSCR is looking for experienced, reliable, creative and dedicated youth workers to help support all functions of an Elementary Summer Recreation and Enrichment Center site (SREC). Form meaningful relationships with staff and students while leading, coaching and supporting the team. Paid professional development and training are provided to help build your skills. During summer, MSCR offers the Summer Recreation and Enrichment Centers (SREC). MMSD students enrolled in morning Summer School, transition to SREC mid-day to join MSCR staff for a variety of recreation and enrichment activities (outdoor, science, art, music, drama, etc.) and field trips.

Each SREC site provides programming for approximately 180 students in grades 4k-4.
Classrooms typically have 15-18 students that are supervised by two or more Program Leaders.
Each site has a leadership team that consists of one Director, 3-5 Assistant Directors and one Inclusion Assistant Director. ADs are typically assigned to support a specific grade level.
Assistant Directors begin their day checking in with the Director to prep. AD’s greet and check in with Program Leaders as they arrive and help them prep. The majority of the time is spent providing support for staff and students during program time. End-of-day duties may include checking in with staff, families and/or the Director; clean up and prep for the following day, conducting a staff meeting, etc

Job Description & Duties:

  • Work as a team with Site Director & other Assistant Site Directors to prepare for and oversee a six-week summer program for elementary age children.
  • Organize special events for participants.
  • Train, support, supervise and evaluate program staff.
  • Assist program leaders with behavior management and intervention.
  • Communicate with parents as needed.
  • Assist with programming and supply coordination and organization.
  • Supervise field trips.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Start Date: 5/1/2024

Program Dates:

Leadership Training: All Leadership members meet with their supervisor once between May 1 and 17. All Leadership members choose Option 1 or 2 (weekend or evening) for SREC Intro and Inclusion training; and all Leadership members attend May 23 together. Holtzman Learning Center is located at, 333 Holtzman Rd, Madison, WI 53713.
All Leadership - Between May 1 and 17, one meeting TBD with Supervisor (in-person or remote)
and
Option 1/weekend - Saturday May 18, 10-2pm @ Holtzman OR Option 2/evening - Tuesday/Thursday, May 21 & 28, 6-8pm @ Holtzman
and
All Leadership - May 23 6:00pm-8:00pm @ Holtzman
~25 hours between May 29 and June 7 are available for training week prep TBD w/Site Director.
All staff Training Week: June 10-14 - In person, on site 10:30am-4:30pm.
Program Dates & Times:
Monday, June 17-July 26 Summer School/SREC Program, No program/staff: June 19, July 4 & 5 (unpaid holiday closure). SREC program hours: 12-4pm Monday thru Friday.

Work Location:

WEST/SOUTH: Chávez, Lincoln, Olson, Southside, Thoreau.

EAST/NORTH: Elvehjem, Hawthorne, Lake View.

Hours/week: Up to 35 hours per week.

Work hours:

AD Hours: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm (times are approximate; schedule will be determined by the Site Director), up to 35 hours/week.

Payrate: 17.00 - 17.00 /hour

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children from diverse backgrounds
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Prior work experience.
  • Must be 18 or older.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth in a recreation or childcare setting.
  • Experience training, supporting and supervising staff and/or volunteers.
  • Experience providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong or other languages.
